Default I Dont want to pack my power auger, how deep can a finbore hand auger cut

I dont want to travel 15km on a quad with a heavy ice auger and have to worry about tipping it and spilling oil ect. If i was to pack a finbore hand auger how deep can it cut? i dont want to run into a situation where the ice is 30 inches deep and i need extensions.

planning a trip into a secluded area

Conceivably, it can cut until the bend in the shaft touches the ice. I myself would run out of gas after more than a couple of those.

ETA: Rapala does make a 12" extension if you are worried I guess. https://rapala.ca/products/fin-bore-...l-12-extension

I carry my auger on the front rack of my quad using two of those gun forks. I put them on the very front and angle them back towards the handlebars a bit. Auger sits in them and rests on the rack. A couple extra bungee straps to hold it solid and it's all good. Orient it the same way you would laying it in the box of your truck.

Or alternatively, take the auger off and have the powerhead sit upright on a milk crate in your sled.

Years ago, all we had was a T-handle auger. I don't recall ever running into a situation where we couldn't drill deep enough. Mind you, the years may have clouded my memory.

Just like this one:

If it was me, I would just get something like the Clam auger bracket.

All I ever used for at least my first 20 years of icefishing was a 6" manual auger. I never ran into ice thick enough that I couldn't get through. With good blades and a buddy to help its not even that hard to punch a few holes in 3' of ice. If you need to move a bunch to find the fish it can get a bit tiresome when the ice is thick. To this day if I need to walk on I still pack that hand auger rather than my Jiffy. If I need to drive any distance to get to a lake the hand auger comes as well, if my power auger craps out I can still fish, for the application you described I would not be without one.

To me a good hand auger is like a .22, sure you'll probably move on to bigger things but you will always be glad you have it. No amount of fishing tackle is complete without one IMO.

We have bored holes numerous times up in the northern part of Ab where the bend on the handle would bottom out, taper the hole with a axe to allow a couple more inches and it would break through. I did have a couple times where that just would not do enough. Kinda discouraging to try another hole after that. Make sure to have good blades, 24-30" is not a big deal with a good hand auger.

I would be hauling the power auger 1 or 2 holes in 2+ ft of ice limits where you can fish lol. Been there with a hand auger and on your knees trying to break through. Never used one again since i got a power one. Put a bag over the head and have the gas tank up. Shouldn't leak, if it does the bag will catch it.

Default Get one of these

http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=313301

Wrap a heavy blanket round it if your are worried. Plenty of room for a PA and the rest of your gear. Had mine out on some rough ice, rides nice and the runners are slick.

If it's the weight, oil and gas you're worried about, you should think about an electric Ion, if it's in your budget. Or even a small sled to pull some of your gear in.
I don't care if your Arnold Schwartsennger, drilling by hand gets boring very quickly

If you are already riding 15 K in, and I imagine this is a Perch Hunt, then you are cutting holes, and lots of them.

Why invest the time and beating you are going to take to get to Lake X, and limit your ability to move around to find the fish?

I would take the hand Auger as a back up. It could be handy if there are old holes to open up, or your gas auger acts up on you.
