What kind of bullet? The Federal Vital shock line includes alot of different kinds. I guess it doesn't really matter. A 180 gr 30-06 will do plenty of damage to a black bear.

For the most part, any sentence that begins with "Is the 30-06 enough for....." its a pretty safe assumption that the answer will be 'YES'....
Put a bullet in the right spot....the 30-06 is more than enough for anything you'll encounter in Alberta....

Duke,
30-06 will do fine for black bear. They are pretty easy to kill if you hit them good and do not have that tough of skin.
Good Luck.

Make sure you know where the vitals are on a bear.

30.06
In good hands there isn't an animal in this province an .06 won't drop.

No you need a Marlin .444 or at least a .417 for bear. If you can get your hands on a nice military issue 50 cal that might be better or maybe consider a RPG or howitzer.
Just in case anyone tries to jump down my throat for my sense of humor or lack of tolerance. Yea i am being sarcastic! Any rifle that is legal to hunt with in Alberta will kill a bear.. if you can shoot it. ok let me repeat the most important part... IF YOU CAN SHOOT IT.

Why not just shake a grocery bag at the bear. They are so dangerous the eco freaks are banning them. And there must be something to it because I've watched wardens stampede elk with plastic bags for 20 years.
Animals know they are dangerous because when they see them they are gone. Not sure what caliber you should use. Probably anything safeway sized of bigger will do the job. Parks uses yellow ones on elk, not sure what they recomend for bears.
Actually I'm surprised the liberal government did not started a registry. These dangerous bags can be found under just about every sink in every home in the nation. Not even under lock and key. They don't even keep them out of the hands of known criminals or kids. I guess they just couldn't get to it with in the term of their mandate.
Good luck with your hunt!

There isn't an animal in north america I would hesitate shooting with my 30-06 including the brown bears...the 30-06 is more than capable, its usually the hunter that is questionable.

A bear does not have some super powers, you don't need a magnum to kill them. for the most part they are smaller than a moose or elk...like I said above its not the gun that *****$ the pot on the shot its the hunter.

I think that list is a little conservative but not that far fetched. Once you get into the heavier bullets it accounts for all. Not too sure if you require a 180gr out of a 300wmag to take a caribou though
works like a dream though

i kill them with a bow and arrow at 300fps so i'd say 2700 more fps or what ever a 30 06 is would do the trick.lol

Amen on the 180 grainer in 30-06 being a-ok. Good, well constructed bullets in 150 and 165 grain will do the job also, with proper bullet placement.

My first rifle was a 30-06, figured I needed a large shell. Not knowing any better I bought 220 grain shells. Shot my first deer with that, let me tell you it did the trick!

a 30-06 with 180ngrain bullets is more than sufficient.
In fact I would prefer it for a grizzly over a much larger rifle...
with a 30-06 it will expend the energy inside an animal vs out the far side of the animal....
look at a .17HMR on coyotes... small hole in... explosion and no exit and coyote drops....
one I hit this year stopped in his tracks opened his moth and coughed oyt a whack of lung blood and dropped.....
heck for black bears I have shot lots with a .243 and no problems....
now my preferred weapon is a bow!.....
