winter scene - predator control
Having trapped and processed winter coyote fur for 50 years ...now I just do predator control and "leave them where they fall", seems wasteful and sad.
There is no incentive to process the fur at current prices.

"leave them where they fall"
Kill 'em all.

Yup given they are worthless it's just a matter of thinning them out, I have switched back to shooting hollow points this year, it tears them up bad but I'm sure the magpies and ravens enjoy the easy start to the free meal

That's a nice pale fur coyote - color is more important then size !

Breaks my heart to waste the fur, but yeah - those song dogs won't shoot themselves.
Someday I'll have a reasonable setup for skinning at home. Have lots of rearranging to do first, though.

Very sad when Canada Goose wanted to look good to PETA and now using recycled fur for their $1700 plus high end parkas. We hunters and trappers sold ~5 million processed coyotes per year in Alberta at over $100 a pelt. Now coyotes are eating ranchers calves in spring.

I’m still putting up pelts. I don’t do high volume, only as many as my stupid job allows me to get out. Yeah, only the nicest furs get a ride, but all my stuff sold last march so I guess only time will tell this year. Auctions can be funny sometimes.

Do you have a link where you found those numbers?

^ I would think the population of coyotes in Alberta is low hundreds of thousands. If I felt “adventurous”, I’d say half a mil and probably be over estimating significantly. Just my guess though.

I'm not driving around looking for coyotes, not doing any feed stations or any snaring. Local sheep farmers are loosing sheep to coyotes and I've been contacted to help. I'm only interested in "calling" and "shooting" for recreational reasons and to help out the farmer.
These sheep are mature large animals and would be a handful for one coyote so I'm guessing there must be 3-6 coyotes in pack to take down one sheep.
Glad to take down these marauders and not under estimate their tenacity.

The coyote population will continue to grow over the next 2-3 years. I wonder if mange will come back with the over population like it did 10 years ago.
The farmers have all contacted wildlife officers, local government (county) for help....with no interest in helping...just worthless advice.
Feel sorry for the deer

coyotes
Sorry guys in my older age I was thinking about coyote $dollar sales in Alberta that were close to $5 million per year, when prices were strong. Our typical yearly production from traplines was around 30 to 50,000/year. Typical NAFA sale was upto 80 to 100,000 pelts offered with FHA sales around 40,000 pelts offered. Both auction houses usually had 2 auction sales per year.
Hope this helps clarify the previous strong coyote pelt market in Alberta/Canada when some Top Lot heavies would go for upto $500.

I used to walk back in for miles and drag out 2_3 coyotes.
Now, I leave them where they fell.
Sucks.

Oh nice! I almost bought one of those as a coyote rig early this year. Unfortunately the money was needed elsewhere... Which is OK too.

Now that's a fine way to spend a winter day. Have the 22 250 in a Finnlight, works so well. Thanks for the pic!
