Default Coyotes vs .22

We have lots of coyotes at work hanging around trying to snag some geese. As they do this, they are spooking the horses. Besides my bow, all I have to contend with them is a .22. Just wouldn't look very good to set up a blind and spend the afternoon waiting for them to come in.

What is the farthest distance I should attempt to kill them with the .22, and would a head shot or vitals be better?

a poke between the lookers will tip him. run velocitors or mini mags (hi perf of some kind)for the best results.
id suggest a jacketed solid point over a hollow point, penetration is probably more important that dumping energy, course,...this may be up for debate.
id want to keep the distance to 75-50 or less.
of course its back to what kind of groups you can cut at the range you are shooting for
good luck...

I agree with Roger on the 50 -75 yrds. I have taken coyotes with my .22 lr out to 100 yrds. I use hollow points as well. Seem to be the right bullet. Good luck and good shootin.

see if you can borrow somthing larger or have a friend come out. I would never personaly shoot anything smaller than a .223 with such a small round (.22) anything is possible. you should not have to rely on a perfect head shot within a certian amount of yards. and in the field even the best are fooled by guessing yards. Having a wounded animal run off wounded to suffer because your ill equiped is not a feeling id like.

The tiny but very destructive .17MHR leaves softball sized exit wounds out to 100 yards. Don't overlook that tiny but deadly pea!!!

I just got a Marlin 983S in .22 WMR that I'd not hesitate to use on a 'yote. I'm gonna chrony various loads I bought for it, but a few are listing 2200 fps. With the 22" barrel its sporting I expect pretty decent velocities.

I've taken them at 50-75yds with a yellow jacket hollow point to the neck. I do think that a solid point would be more effective however. And probably to the melon.

.22 is definately light for coyotes. I've shot two with a .22lr. One I shot thru the lungs when I was a kid, It took forever to die. The last one a couple years ago I shot right between the eyes and a little high a little over 50yds, It dropped him like a hammer, so if you're going to use a .22 make sure it is a lr hollow point and pop em about a inch high between the eyes at a reasonable range. I used a remington subsonic when I dropped the one, nice and quiet, and still hit him plenty hard.
