Default dog training

I want to run my dogs this summer on wild birds just to polish them on their game anywhere in the months of july and august. Do i need a special permit from fish and wildlife? is this legal to do in Alberta? Anyone have any knowledge on this?

You need permission of the landowner. Public land in the southeast corner is off limits because of the sage grouse. I don't know the legal boundaries as I am never down there, but puphood1 would likely know something about it.

If you are a pro trainer you will need a dog training permit.

It would be intersting to know what the release regulations are. From what I have read the released birds dont even make it through winter, well very small percent. Could be good training for young dogs and fun for the group.

Would you need a special permit to do a small organized event? Smaller scale than Brooks so that average joe schmo AO members could get in on. I know that it could be tons of fun and good fundraiser

What does everyone else think? Hopefully without a ****ing match over whos dog gets more birds.

HUNTING = FUN PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

You had to write that just to stir the pot The only thing I know is it has to be aa registered release site so hooking up with someone like Wessex for a planned event would be easiest IMO as for your whizzing matches most of what I read are complements on one anothers dogs or some clean fun. a couple guys tend to pull the trigger on each other but you could have a play nice or go home rule or a special area for cage matches then the dogs could bet on the fights

No permit required if you are a Amt. Trainer but you of coarse still require permission from the land owner to run dogs on their property. I also touch base and get permission from them on any lease land they have as I think its just curtious. What is public land in the South is a whole different issue and life is to short to to be argueing what your rights are and what is the lease owners rights are on lease lands.

Running dogs in July-Aug. is OK but I run dogs on the 2-3-4th. weeks of July and see how small the young birds are and if I run into what I cosider small young birds I pack up and go home and give the birds more time. I have usually found any where from the 4 week of July to the 10th of Aug to be when I start running.

The closed area to training due to Sage Grouse habitat is from the SK. border to Formost and from #61 to the MT. border Approx. and that runs untill Aug then it is open to training for Amt. trainers only. This area and its rules should be discussed with F&W if you plan on going that way as my understanding is even the training of Dogs on Private lands is off limits till Aug.

I peronally think the best time to work dogs is from the middle of Aug through to the end of Sept. as the Chicken have not come together in large flocks yet and the dog work is at its best on strong flying family groups. Huns in this area seem mostly to stay in the grain fields till they are cut and so you are looking at some time in Sept. to work on them...........puphood1
