Unhappy old 30-06 accuracy

Hi, I recently bought a used 30-06 with a new scope. My first rifle for deer. I been shooting at a target at 100 yrds that it 6 by 6 inches. my groups are a little scattered, im using 150grn win superx they are cheapest to buy. I seem to hold steady enough, yet not really happy with groups. Any shooting tips would be great.

Clean it (get all signs of copper out) get it on the bench, with bags. Barring any resolution form those two items, hook up with someone like a fellow AO member who knows their stuff and get some hands on training, and tips.

BTW: where are you at?

Default Old 30-06

Follow Dicks instructions as per the cleaning and the rests. it is a possibility that your barrel may have some wear on it. I have a 30-06 Springfield x-millitary, it has button rifling instead of the normal groove (raised ridge instead of a machined groove) it does exactly the same with 150 gr. bullets, hard to get a good group, I found that it likes the beefier bullets 180-220 and is dead on every shot using these. These bullets seem to grip the barrel better. Let us know how you make out.

post a picture of your grouping, then we can critique it properly. And then give you the right advice.

"New Scope". Make sure all your screws are good and tight.

My 30-06 hates the 150's.........try heavier bullets as previously suggested. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Put some bore solvent on that brush and run it up and down a few times, then I wrap a patch around the brush and push it through, then another, and sometimes another. Some time you have to scrub/brush with solvent a few times. Use a bore guide to keep the solvent and junk out of your action. I use butches bore shine. This is what I do anyways.

Thumbs up

Sounds like you need to sart from scratch to Some good advice here clean it good fisrt then check all the srews are tight even the base's and rings even if your not sure your local gunsmith can check it for you for a small $$$ i would also try a few diffrent brands of ammo it may cost a few extra $$$$ but well worth it in the long run Good luck .

Are you shooting off of a bench/picnic table with front and rear sandbags?I skip the sand and have #8 birdshot in mine It's damned solid.Wear muffs to save your ears and avoid developing a flinch.I don't know your experience level so it don't hurt ask.As others advised check to see all of your mts and ring screws are tight.Have someone you trust shoot it too.....It will work out...............Harold

This is my first rifle, But im a good shot with shotgun and compound bow. Confident my scope is adjusted and tight. Im shooting over the hood of my car for a rest with a heavy jackett for support. My shots are steady and feel good, Im hitting the target sometimes but not consistent grouping. I can group Arrows at 50yrds but not Bullits at 100. I will try the heavier 180grn.Be a couple of weeks before have chance to try them though.I will post results and pics if can figure out that @##??? camera.

the hood of the car is not a bench.... get to a sturdy bench and shoot from proper sand bags or rifle rest like a lead sled. let someone else shoot it as well.Try some different brands of ammo.... you will find one that works if your barrel isn't ruined. best of luck.

The hood of your car is not a benchmark for accuracy.....Nor is it legal.....

If you want good accuracy, you need to first learn how to SHOOT. This involves setting up a good rest, learning trigger control, breathing, etc

A rolled up jacket on the hood of a car aint gonna do much for accurate shooting.....

Shooting off a car/truck hood is like trying to split a diamond on a trampoline!Find a solid bench or pic-nic table and you'll get consistancy.......Harold

Err Uh, and what do you accomplish by this method?
The removal of copper(which left un checked will cause accuracy issues) with solvents like Butches, requires contact time with the bore. The copper is removed through a chemical reaction, not through abbrasive action. A bore brush is for removing carbon, and powder deposits!
And lastly a bore guide does indeed provides the convenince of keeping solvent out of the action and magazine well, but it's real purpose is to guide the cleaning rod into the bore so that the transistions in the chamber dimensions do not get damaged by the cleaning rod attacments.

If you are going to provide the Lad with some advice, at least make sure it is the correct advice, and not some sort of fault plagued system, which may cause him possible further greif down the road.
