Default Does Alberta have any Panfish?

So, forgive me if this is a dumb question.

But does Alberta have any panfish? I'm refering to things like: Bluegill, sunfish, or Redgill.

Hell, I know they're not "panfish" but I'd even like to know if there's any Carp or Bass. Now, don't get me wrong, I know there's "Grass carp", but they're a science fish, not a sport fish.

From what I can tell Alberta has nothing but Brown and Rainbow trout, White fish, and I guess pike.

But yeah:

Does Alberta have any pond fish or Panfish to speak of?

I believe that Perch, Mountain Whitefish and Grayling would all fit the panfish classification.

Yeah, I've heard about White fish. There's plenty of those guys in the Bow River which is just a hop skip and a jump away.

Grayling has got to be the weirdest damn local fish I've seen so far.

Perch, perch you've got me sold on. Is there any areas within or close to calgary that I can reel in a few of those?

It's too bad Alberta doesn't have any Bluegill/Sunfish. Probably due to how easy they are to catch, but they sure can be fun to angle.

I believe the closest lake to the Calgary area with Pumpkinseed would be Lake Windermere in BC (About a 3 hour drive from Calgary).

I'm not familure with Calgary area waters.

I fished for them south of Edmonton, mostly in Buck lake, and out towards Lac La Biche

Closest Ive seen panfish, (Bluegills, pumpkinseeds etc) was in Duck Lake at Creston. Hadnt seen them for over 40 years back in Ontario, was a nice change of pace. And BASS too!!!! Ive also caught Bullheads and Black Crappies and Carp in Osoyoos lake but that was a long time ago. Oh and also BASS!
Flyguy believe it or not, not everyone is into trout.

Spoken like someone who hasnt done much of panfishing. I dont know how anyone could not like those little buggers. More fun that perch IMO, fight a litle better and they take dry flys more often.

I think it might have more to do with Winter die off to be honest.
Isn't the sunfish species more of a "light" winter fish?

These guys know what I'm talking about.

Those pumpkinseeds have a lot of spirit for such a small body and they're an endearing handsome little fish.

I wish Alberta had Pumkinseeds, Crappies, rock bass, bluegills etc, not to mention Channel Catfish. I would probably start fishing again/more in Alberta.

Rock Bass are probably the scrappiest fish for their size of any of them.

We have a confirmed population of bluegill now in Saskatchewan - maybe it is only a matter of time for Alberta.

Carburn park
You, good sir, have just accidentally revealed to me EXACTLY what I was looking for. This Carburn lake/park looks absolutely perfect.. sounds like there's a ton of pike in it though.

Yeah, but Saskatchewan also has Bass, Carp, Buffalo carp, and crayfish, but they've never made the leap over to Alberta.. as interesting as that would be.

Really?

I didn't know Alberta had Crayfish. What river or pond are they scuttling around in?

I love Trapping crayfish.

crayfish in most if not all southern ab resevoirs, they are all throughout the eid system. Carburn does have some pike and perch but I believe their numbers are rather low now.

Its happened in Alberta. I think in a way we've been pretty lucky to have limited bucket brigade activity so intro's often end up staying very localized (down south anyways).

The bluegill came in naturally during the flooding events over the last several years. I am working down there after easter, I am going to drop in a few traps and see if I can get a couple.

Interesting. Well, better than the way we get new fish. I'm pretty sure the ones in Alberta came from bc as post-holiday stowaways. Good luck catching some, they are pretty little fish.
