Almost any stream near the mountains is going to have rockies. Every Alberta watershed has them. Just throw on a nymph and you're bound to hook up with one.

If we know where you're at, it will be easier to give you some direction. Find spots with moderate current (helps if there's a fallen tree or 2 in the water), and drift a nymph (hare's ear usually works well) through.

you may find some in the jumpingpound. heavy red nymphs such as a copper john or red wire worm will work.

I'm glad when people appreciate whitefish. They are underrated and fight good too. If it's not too far for you you might try the crowsnest? I couldnt fool those Wiley rainbows down there but did ok for whitefish. Or if you want to head north, the Clearwater had lots as well.

I get them all the time right in red deer. Find a deep slow pool and drift a royal coachmen or San Juan worm under a strike indicator. It's a little bit sacrilege but tipping your fly with a maggot can really get them going too.

They are interesting fish. On the Bow, where I catch most of my whitefish, they are "Here today, gone tomorrow". Some years are better than others. Last year I had no problems catching a fish or two every other trip or so to the river starting in August. This year, I have not got a single one in all my trips to the river. They can sometimes be one of the hardest fish to locate and catch, I find. Even more difficult than Brown trout in a bad year. Mysterious fish.

Correct me if I am wrong. I thought White Fish usually travel in a school? And they are pretty much everywhere in the ES1 streams.
Caught a few from Elbow River last month, and a few from Bow River this year.
I was just on the Bow yesterday in Calgary NW and I caught a 20" White in a very slow pool, and I know there are more white fish in the same pool, but ran out of time...

Went fishing for whites yesterday in a spot I normally find them. Ended up catching 3 brookies and 2 browns

Usually it's the other way around, so if you want to catch brownies, go fishing for whites

Anybody got any good smoker recipes(including brine) for whitefish?
