Flat butt tapered leaders?

I ordered a couple to try them out. Are they more of a gimmick than anything? The theory sounds like it would work but do they actually perform? I’ll probably try one tomorrow but I doubt I’d be able to tell the difference to be honest.

Stop wasting money on tapered leaders, buy leader material and tie it on. You will pay less and get lots more line for the money. In the end your only using 3-6 pound test anyways, due to the taper. Your paying extra for many feet of line that's doing nothing.

I used to make my own knotted leaders, but then when I "discovered" the benefits of fishing with an indicator, the knots interfered with using the Rowley type indicators.

Double or triple surgeons knots slide through the peg of Phils indicators no problem, been using them for years. Don't waste your money on tapered leaders for stillwater fishing. Depending on depth I typically use a section of 12 lb fluorocarbon line to a section of 8lb to a small swivel. Indicator above swivel and then quality fluoro tippet to fly(s). Cheap and easy.

To my understanding, instead of round, it comes down to more of a rectangle shape and it's supposed to present the flies a little more delicately. More for dry flies from what I have read about them, but fairly mixed reviews. I didn't get a chance to try them today as I had hoped.

Never used a purchased tapered leader in 50 years. Somehow I still catch fish.

Indicator fishing: Long section of 15lb maxima to the swivel, then add 12/10lb fluorocarbon to flies.

You don't want fluorocarbon between your fly line and indicator as it sinks and the underwater drag will effect the strike.

Complete non-issue if you are in contact with the indicator. Depending on depth I set my indicator rigs up to have 2-4 ft of fluoro before the bobber, if you have 7 or 8 feet lying in between maybe but why would you do that.

I really enjoy 40-50 fish days during chroni season while I hear the moaning about indicators and guys wondering why they aren't catching fish lol

When I start the day fishing at 20ft down and then switch to fishing at 5ft down, the distance between bobber and fly line changes quite a bit. I don't change leaders, just bobber position.

Perhaps those "moaners" were simply not fishing chironomids, the trout's particular food of choice at the time.
You do not need an indicator to be successful at chironomid fishing....nor do you need an indicator to be successful at nymphing in a river.

That said...whatever floats yer boat....

Back to the OP's topic....did you get to try them?...notice any difference?

No, I still haven't tried them. I'm been having to muchuck and fun fihing the little nymphs and emergers that I haven't even though about dry flies. I had a REALLY good day, numbers wise, on a stocked pond with them. I'm still hoping to get them out soon.
