Great Fly-Fishing spots
Hi Everyone, I'm new to Calgary and of course I am very excited for this summer's fishing season.
I'm Looking for some places to fly fish, Does anyone know any calm rivers that are good to fish? Or lakes that would be good for belly boating within a hour or 2 drive from Calgary?
Last weekend I fished parts of the Bow but with no luck!
The more replies the better, as any idea can potentially be a good one.

Fovourite spot
Brown trout on the main fork of Prairie Creek. Lots of fishable water expect
to catch browns 20"+. Best time 1st week of July late a night. Big dear hair flies. As long as it floats. Presentation is the big thing not what you cast at them. If there is a full moon fish all night.
All I can tell you is near Strubble Lake SW of Rocky Mountain House. Gte a map from the Clearwater County at the County office in Rocky. Check with land owners first.
Good luck

Welcome,
Keep trying on the Bow, u'll get rewarded! My favourite small stream fishing is up on the Raven River. It's extremely tough to manoeuvre around but the fish are beautiful and it's nice and quiet. Expect to lose a few lures in the trees!!

Welcome to Calgary King Fisher! You now live in the right place if you love fly fishing... There are countless excellent river and still water opportunities w/ in 2 hours of Calgary. I would maybe recommend purchasing the 2012 Alberta Fishing Guide (it's out now) and look up some rivers/lakes to check out. You will frequently hear about the popular spots like the Bow, Oldman, Crow, Raven, etc but there is many, many more... You just have to go out and do some exploring.
There is lots of helpful threads about the Bow on this forum so I wont go in to detail but yes it is one of the best rivers in Alberta and it is as good as it's reputation. It just takes some time to figure out how to fish it, maybe start by looking in to the hatch chart as it varies week to week and month to month through out the year.
Good luck!!

Awesome, thanks guys! I have a couple places I'm going to try to today, I will let you know if anything happens out there. I'm thinking about trying something a little more east of the city as I'm not sure if fishing season is open on the western side yet....
Deerfoot to 11st and just off the highway and small hike down to the river, I've seen a lot of people dropping boats off there, so I think it could be a good place to bring out the waders and cast that rod.
PS How amazing is Bass pro Shops, Wow, Spent 4 hours there !!!!
