Yep a few of the bites I had last night I just dropped the line in and let the current take the line under the obstructions and then just gently pulled it back against the current.

The main reason I needed to cast a fair distance was there were plenty of spots where you couldn't get to the bank so had to cast to those spots from a distance away.

Another common hurdle for new fly fishers is knowing what type of water holds fish. No point in casting into water that doesn't hold fish, but that comes with experience i guess

and differs season to season, species to species, and even creek to creek. the more you fish, the more you know.

plenty of literature and online resources available to help with this.

also, may I suggest learning to swing streamers and wet flies down and across? One of the easiest and most effective strategies IMO

Yeh that I am ok with. I've fished all my life. Just not fly fished or really bothered too much with trout before now. But I've got a good idea of habitat.
