Default Mussels as bait... anyone tried?

Just wondering if anyone has tried using mussels as bait (no shell, just meat)? I have some in the freezer that are a bit freezer burnt I was going to throw out. But then I got thinking, they are fairly fishy smelling, and might make good pike or sturgeon bait...
anyone ever tried?

Used them all the time in the Salt, but never in fresh water.

Can't see why they would not work here.

Perch would probably like it... I know in the east, like Ontario, where we have small panfish, there are species that actually specialize in eating fresh water mulluscs and clams, so it would be a good bait for smaller fish.
