See Kmart's post, those are Verpa Bohemica, not true morels, but still edible, be sure to cook them.

Does anyone know if the false morels grow in the same type of areas as true morels?

yes. The rain this week could be perfect for a good crop of Morchella (Morel) over the next few weeks.

Morels grow in all parts of the province. You just need to find them.
Good hunting everyone!

Hey guys,
Went out this afternoon and for the first time in 3 springs of trying hard, I finally found some. There wasn't many (a pound a a half approx.) and they were little, but hey, couldn't come back later so picked them anyways. Can't wait to try a few. The heads were about the size of my thumb, do they get much bigger? If so, how long would I have to wait before they get much bigger?
Can I blanch these and freeze them?
Thanks!

Isnt Verpa Bohemica dangerous to eat? This is what I've always thought. I found tons of them this year but just left them as I thought they were dangerous.

These are 100% Verpa Bohemica. They are not dangerous to eat although some people report loss of coordination and upset stomach after consuming them.

Verpas are very good if thoroughly thoroughly cooked..I ate tons of them in the past and never got ill. you can freeze them after cooking a batch in butter...mmmmm.
btw went to a spot west of Edmonton to check for black morels, not up yet.

Awsome haul! Those are beauties!
A bit of advice, for two good reasons, For free....
Cut the morels from the ground rather than pulling them.
First, the mycelium (roots) could produce more mushrooms if they are not disturbed.
Second, you will have much cleaner mushrooms at home without the dirt going into the bag. Diry morels are tough to clean.
Enjoy!

I ran into a bunch of those huge grey ones like Trap34's last June. Can anyone positively identify that specific type of morel (subspecies?)
Also, I use a dehydrator to preserve my morels. Just add water to reconstitute - or add dried strips to stews and soups and let them rehydrate while cooking. You don't need a lot to add a whole lot of flavour. I've even heard of some people using dehrdrated morels like 'chew' - tuck some under your lip for a long lasting 'shroom flavor.

Those look like true morels, pretty awesome find and nice size. I'm hoping to go out looking tomorrow after work and find a few.

Morels
Went out on Sunday near Rocky and searched about 7 diff spots and only came up with morels in one of them. These are my first ever fresh morel finds!! Came across a few "false morels" in the same area too,,nasty looking.
I was surprised to find them where i did, cause half of them were growing beside a gravel road in the ditch. There seemed to be in a spot that was mixed spruce and birch together. Marked the spot with my GPS so I can get back there easy.
There were tasty fried up!
Here are pics of my finds.

I went to Spray Lake Provincail park and Brown-Lowery Provincial Park yesterday and found nothing.

Morels
One of the best peices of advice i could give that I learned from watching alot of youtube videos would be , If you spot one, stop and crouch down low and scan the area. Then re-scan from a diff angle. They sure can camo themselves into the foliage.
Have fun

This advice is bang on. Once you see one, STOP! Look very closely for more. Take a step, stop and look some more, 360 degrees.
After you find one, your brain will recognize ( image imprinting) what you are looking for. When I'm out hunting morels, my mind often tells me there is one there before I visually locate it.

Verpa Bohemica
A friend and I went out looking for mushrooms yesterday and found this nice bunch of Verpa's. This is my first time harvesting mushrooms and want to be very careful as I prepare them. Any feedback would be most welcome, either as a post or a PM, thanks.
Thanks for your input as well Walking Buffalo![IMG] [/IMG]
