Default Maggots as bait for walleye

Are maggots good for walleye fishing in a river? More specifically, on a pickeral rig in a slow moving river? I've never used maggots before, how do u put them on a hook, just feed it through them like you would a worm?

They are a bit small and you would probably do better with bigger baits like worms or minnows

Grab one end and poke it through the hook. Don't slide it on but on a pickerel rig I doubt it would stay on(maggot is too small). Big dew worms is the way to go or minnows.

or leeches

believe it or not I was at PCR and there was a guy fishing leeches and minnows on a pickerel rig and he was getting outfished by a little girl using a pickerel rig with chunks of hotdogs. Halfway through the day the guy went back to his campsite and got hot dogs and used a hotdog chunk on one hook and a minnow on the other.

I sh** you not he told me the walleye bit the hot dog 3x more than the minnow

planning a trip there with the girlfriend for some walleye on the fly. I always go there if I'm tired of getting skunked or catching tiny trout. gonna give her a catatonic leech so she doesn't have to cast a clouser with her 5wt (she's new to fly fishing). Thinking 20 feet of straight 6lb mono with a weighted leech on one end and a quick release strike indicator.

sorry to hijack a thread though!

use any of the mentioned baits, in my opinion location matters more than bait anyway

As mentioned they are too small. You need a ridiculously small hook to be able to use maggots without them exploding.

What's PCR?

I have no issues boating the eyes with minnows.

I've never used maggots for walleye bait. I used leeches years ago as a kid.

Strangely I am looking into breeding leeches...

Caught plenty of eyes on maggots over the years while perching. But as stated you'll be better off with minnows, smelts, worms or even hot dogs on some water bodies.

Can't use any other bait, just maggots on the McLeod. Minnows work great there if you don't mind breaking the regs. Saw a guy and his girlfriend there one day catching 2 at a time non stop, as soon as it hit the water they had a fish on. Then an old timer should them the regs and they packed up pretty quick and left
