Alberta is thought to have the most gold in Canada unfortunately its all flour gold but easy to fine hard to find enough to be worth any thing though

I'm going to try it in the Peace River this spring, I bought a panning kit for $60.00 it has 3 pans ( red plastic 2 -14''& 1-10" ), 3 small gold vials ( to carry the gold you find), a small magnet, a small shovel, a sniffer bottle, magnifying glass, and a cinch sack to carry every thing. Who knows I may find something, if nothing else it will be another fun hobby in the outdoors . I will let you guys know if I find any thing.

You can really speed things up with a couple of different sized screens to wash off the diff sized rocks into your pan before you toss them.

North Sask. gold is very pure, usually close to 24 carat. For every 10 to 15 ounces of gold you get , you will get about 1 ounce of platinum.

In recent years, the all gold reported recovered from the North Saskatchewan by gravel operations and miners is quite a bit.

2009 - Approx. 60 KG. = 60,000 grams = 60,000 x 43.75 = $ 2,625,000

2008 - Approx. 70 KG. = 70,000 grams = 70,000 x 43.75 = $ 3,062,500

2007 - Approx. 60 KG. = 60,000 grams = 60,000 x 43.75 = $ 2,625,000

Considerable amounts.


If you can find gravel with 20 dollars (todays prices) to the yard of gravel, you are on the best ground you will find. Roughly 144 shovels full per 1 yard of gravel. You have to move alot of gravel in a day.

Going to BC for gold nuggets can be done, but wandering onto someone elses claim there can result in serious consequences. Especially with the price of gold. Most of the ground has been claimed there too. You can get a free miners certificate but still have to get access to good ground by asking claim owners.

Remember ..gold is where you find it. Ausrtralia is the next gold rush. Some very big nuggets have been found there. Google the "hand of faith" nugget. 875 troy ounces found with metal detector in 1980.

I googled "gold panning kit" in Canada and lots of sights came up, I just chose one form BC and orded it over the net, free shipping. I'm not looking to get rich just kill some time in the out doors and I thought it would be fun. I have done a ton of research on the subject and youtube was very informative on panning for gold. Have fun

Get a couple of classifier's, a few empty 5 gal pails, a spade (shovel) and a strong back and you'll be ready to go. You might need more vials tho.

I had said the Gold production of the North Sask was 60 Kg. in 2009., etc..

Just to clarify my mistake.

Gold is the only metal produced in Alberta solely as a by-product from gravel operations using a sluice box at the end of the gravel-washing process.
According to Alberta Energy, the total Alberta production of placer gold in 2008 was about 65 kg. Natural Resources Canada reported 53 kg of total gold production in Alberta in 2007 and 60 kg in 2006.

I was inaccurate in saying it was just the North Sask. river. It was for the entire province.

While you are out moving those golden gravels, keep an eye out for other precious things.

This statement was in information published by Natural Resources Canada :

During the 2008 field season, preliminary estimates for diamond and uranium exploration programs accounted for approximately $11.8 million of the $22.1 million in total mineral exploration and deposit appraisal expenditures in Alberta.

To November 2008, 51 kimberlite bodies (the volcanic rock type most likely to contain economic deposits of diamonds) have been discovered in Alberta. Of these areas, the Buffalo Head Hills area in north-central Alberta has the highest diamond content results to date. 28 of the 41 Buffalo Head Hills bodies contain diamond. At least three of these kimberlites (kimberlites K14, K91 and K252) contain estimated diamond grades of >12 carats per hundred tonnes (cpht). The Buffalo Head Hills kimberlite K252 has the highest estimated diamond grades in Alberta with a preliminary mini-bulk (22.8 t) sample grade of 55 cpht. The biggest diamond found to date in the Ashton K14 complex, at Buffalo Hills, north of Edmonton is 1.3 carats. The diamond is a single crystal, of silvery grey appearance with many dark inclusions making it an industrial grade diamond. In 1958, the first diamond in Alberta was reportedly found in fluvial gravels near Evansburg, east of Edson.

So you never know what you may find in the gravels, aside from gold.

Cost me $330 bucks so im going to see if i can find enough gold to cover supplies

Some one mentioned if you are using anything more then a pan you need a permit?? Where would a fella buy such a thing?

If you check out the Genesee area upstream of Highway 770, west of Edmonton there are some good areas due to all the tight bends in the river. There are still a few good access points to the river if you don't have a boat. A boat would help. Google Earth is a tremendous resource for really looking the river over. It will give you a really good idea of where to go. Even mapquest shows good contour maps of the river.
