Default I'm getting a new Rifle.

I'm new to Alberta but I've been hunting for years. I would like to know if the .270 WSM will be suitable for hunting elk and moose. I already have great sucsess with the .270 for deer. Maybe a .300 win mag would be better. Whats the recoil like on the .300 win mag?

there is absolutely nothing wrong with your 270 for those animals. if you want a new gun though, both your choices would be well suited.

300 winny is a nice round. i had a 300wm that killed my shoulder. and own a 300 wsm that doesnt really bother me. shows you what weight and stock design can do for you.

you have the 270 win already, might as well go with the 300. if the recoil bothers you, chuck a limbsaver recoil pad on it.

.270WSM will do the job just fine on elk and moose.

I use a 270wsm and have taken moose and elk with it and like SH says, it does the job just fine.

As for recoil, my rifle is fairly light with factory recoil pad, I have a buddy with a slightly heavier rifle in 300wm, with a good recoil pad, and we both found my 270 is harsher to shoot recoil wise.

270WSM is a great caliber. I have been very impressed with its performance (Tikka T3 LS model) using 140gr Accubonds on elk, moose, deer, bears..etc. I was a 1 rifle guy for many years (300WM) and tried the WSM band wagon in 2004. I almost prefer hunting with it. I have no problems reccomending this caliber. If you make your shot count, it will put the animal down.

Last elk I took with the 270WSM was a large cow in 2008 @ 200m double lung pass thru, may of hit part of the heart....anyhow the cow flipped over backwards and dropped. BTW it was -33 degrees C .

Your .270 will work just fine for moose and elk, but if you just want a new gun, then get a 300 magnum like the .300WM, something different than what you have. If I was to only have two rifles, a .270 and a .270wsm wouldn't be the combo I'd choose.

I could be wrong but I think he already has the 270WSM and was wondering it was sufficient for elk and moose or if he needed to go to the .300.

I think your right, for me it was the title of the thread that threw me off and made me think ok, does he want to know if he should get a 270wsm?. Honestly, i think the 270wsm, or even 270 win would be fine for elk and moose, it is more shot placement in my personal opinion then bullet size.

Thanks to all. I do Have a .270wsm. I was just planing on a new rifle. I gather that the .300 mag is the way to go for a second big game gun. It will complement the other calibers I have. It looks like the T3 lite gets the nod. Thanks again for the info.

I have a t3 hunter in 300 win mag, its light so it kicks a lil. be sure to put the limbsaver pad on it as the factory pad is very hard. great rifle for the price

Thanks I'll be sure to invest in a limbsaver recoil pad. Ideas on a good scope?

I have a 4.5-14x44mm Zeiss RapidZ 800 on my 270wsm. I like the higher magnifications for those longer shots.
