I have not been there in years but if you are talking cooking lake on hwy 14 I don't even think there is enough water to float a boat anymore

Cooking lake is a hyper-eutrophic lake ending it's life as a shallow slough. There are no fish able to survive in these waters.
By the end of the next month the basin will be choked with vegetation and using a boat with a propeller would be impractical as average water depths are probably less than 3 feet now.
It is, however, an excellent place for bird watching, mosquito swatting and algae slime growing.

Thanks for the input guys. I was only going there to test out the new fishing boat we just purchased. Any recommendation for a lake near Edmonton (1 hr or less) with a boat launch? fishing is a bonus!

Best lake for a quick in and out close to Edmonton is Wizard I'd say. Launch is very good but you have to pay for parking on Friday-Sunday ($20 bucks with trailer). If your gonna go this weekend it will be super crazy there with all the ski boats and the good weather. Lot's of small pike 2-3 lbs in the reeds on the south side of the lake right across from the launch. WATCH FOR ROCKS!! The ski boats avoid this area so it should be calm for fishing. The launch will be very busy this weekend.

Half Moon is almost impossible to launch a boat. The campground owners are very strict and will nickel and dime you to death. I once had to pay $10 just to visit friends that were camping there.

if your boat is small with an electric motor, you could try the morinville reservoir heritage lake
