Default What kind of track?

I am thinking small wolf. Possible wolverine? They just don't seem all that spaced out like a wolf.

I can't see the back pad that good but looks like small cat to me. Wolverine have five toes. Cougar is my guess wolves almost always have claw marks. Not very common in that area?

Pretty big for a cougar. If put down on a fluff of snow I would say Lynx. If put down on old snow (packed), would have to be a cougar. Definitely not a canine or wolverine. If cougar, look out, that's a REAL big Tom.

Maybe I need to get the hounds up to visit!!! I have seen a few tracks now that have looked like big tom tracks but wasn't really sure to be honest. I haven't every seen a lot of cougar tracks to know for sure. I will have to pay more attention and take some pics if I see them again.

Way too short of stride to be a cougar. That's a big barn cat! Lol

Stride is classic Lynx. Was it walking in slush when it was warm out?

A cat will always step in its own tracks, seems to me these ones don't always so maybe we are just not seeing the claw marks from a wolf

No it didn't look like a hopping type track. If you notice in the middle picture thee is a deer track for comparison. It does seem like there are 2 tracks close together then a space and another 2 tracks. To me wolf are spaced pretty equally apart. Also it would seem that it isn't really that big of a track and if a young wolf should he not be with a pack? Maybe he got kicked out? I also do not see lynx tracks in this area. At least not last year

Feline.
Big lynx or a very slowly moving lion.
Could also be a wolf. Hah.
Hard to tell.

Showed the pics to Kelly Morton and he figures Lynx because of the short stride. At first glance he would say lion. I will have to set a lynx pen up in the area next week and see what happens

Default Lynx track

If you don`t see lynx tracks in that area, don`t kill the only one.

Try setting up a trail cam in the area. Can be a good trapline tool too.

Picture 2 tells the story. I would suggest that the 2nd picture reveals that a cougar that was slowly stalking the deer that left the tracks. A hunting cat will move slowly with great precision and slow the pace accordingly. If they are cougar tracks I've seen bigger. And not that far away from your line.

The large back pad, roundness of print, and no claw marks would be cougar no?

Spruce
I skinned two cougar today a 75 an 90 pound females an that's the size of track. Land owner kill. I see lots in the shop an there isent a day I don't cut a track on the line. When the track is the width of the glove then you find a houndsmen. Sorry spruce. If put down on fluff definitely could be Lynx.

Default Tracks

I really like the what's the track post. Everyone has an idea an I really like to guess what I think, but get shot down quite often usually by a local who sees them lots. Everyone has a different view. Nube had a post last year about track an I would have put good money that it was a racoon, turned out it was a porky I even knew that raccoons have never been in the area. Someone should start a thread on what's this track, I would but I really have a hard time posting any pictures it takes me 1/2 hour with my wife telling me how to.

Cats are round

Canines are diamonds

Claws don't mean anything, I've seen both with or without

When Lynx walk off the road they don't sink in the snow, cougar do

Melted out tracks always appear bigger, even if they froze again later

Here is the bottom of a cougar paw to give you a better idea on paw pattern.
