Default Mayan riviera

So I'm going with my gf to the grand Bahia Príncipe tulum on the Mayan in mid April. I'm an avid trout guy but I can't help but be tempted to bring my 4-piece 6wt down and see what I can pull out from the beach. I figure I'll bring one of my older reels but still with a solid disc drag and some streamers... Just looking for some tips, advice, info if any of you guys have any experience with this. Thanks!

I'm headed to that resort in January, will let you know how fly fishing is once I come back. My plan is to hit the shoreline south of resort every morning and evening. 6wt might be a tad bit light if wind is present, i'm packing a 9wt for the trip with intermediate and full sink lines. From info I gathered so far it seems like shoreline along the beach gets deep quick.

Oh that would be greatly appreciated! Yeah 6 weight is the heaviest I have and I'm not gonna buy a new one for this trip. Good luck!

Guys, if you are down by Tulum, you're not that far from Ascencion Bay, probably the best flats bonefishing area around there not called Belize. Contact Pesca Maya and have them pick you up at your hotel and take you for a day of guided bone fishing. They can supply the rod and tackle. I've done it once and will do it again. Had a guide and boat to myself for around $500 including transportation, breakfast and lunch.

For just fishing from shore near your resort, I see a lot more guys using regular hardware tackle than fly rods. I usually take both (I use an 8wt fly rod).

If you're DIY from the beach, get yourself a Salt Intermediate line for the 6wt, I believe Rio has the tropical general purpose lines in Intermediate. Being able to cut through the chop of the waves with a slow sink is pretty crucial to keep connected with your flies. However they do not make it in a 6wt. But if you're 6wt is fast action, the 7wt line is just fine, and may actually help you cast through the ever present wind.

I guess it depends what species you manage to come across. Get yourself some gummy minnows in various sizes and you should be able to tie into whatever is swimming nearby. A couple gotchas, bunny gotchas and avalon flies would be good to have a couple of as well. If you do find bonefish, your best bet is to creep your flies, in a short twitchy fashion like a shrimp or crab would move. Unlike what was mentioned above.

Wow thanks for all the info guys! I don't think I'm gonna add 25% to the cost of the trip by hitting Ascension bay but its tempting...I guess I'm gonna get a saltwater intermediate and kick around the beach a few mornings and hope for the best! Maybe I'll get my gf to snorkelscout for me a few times lol, I bet that'd be a neat experience for both of us!! I look forward to seeing the reports before I go and I'll post my own after. Thanks again!

Howdy,
I was at the same resort 2 years ago. Snorkeling off the beach, there were a large number of small permit and I did see 1 small barracuda.
regards,
Gary

Default Boca payaya

Boca Payaya,
Not sure of the spelling of the name but it's close. It's an Orvis endorsed fly fishing lodge about 1 1/2 hr away. You can get a grand slam there and enjoy a bottle of Silver Oak wine after! First class

Tie a bunch of these in various colors from black to natural to chartruse. I had more fun fishing these than any other pattern in the salt! Hang on tight and watch the wake behind the fly as they attack!

Cozumel (the island directly east of your resort) has good fishing on the northern end in lagoons and on the beach. There's an outfit that runs out of playa del carmen that will guide you in the lagoons. I only fished the beaches.
