Remembrance Day Buck
I had the privilege of growing up in a family that supported my interest of the outdoors. My grandfather was a huge part of that. My parents both working full time jobs (both shift work) I had a lot of time I could have spent to myself getting up to no good. However I had my grandpa to foster my love of hunting. He was my first hunting buddy (mentor) from the age of 3 and that was the start of my 20 year long tradition of hunting on remembrance day. My grandpa and I would always hunt the morning of Nov.11 and being a Veteran we always capped the morning hunt off at 10 am so we could listen to the full service on the radio in northern Manitoba. Ever since I moved to Alberta in 2006 I have always made a point to call my Grandpa after the morning hunt to just tell old hunting stories. Sadly he passed away this past August so I never got to tell him this story. Nov.11/15 Morning hunt was fairly uneventful couple does and 2 small bucks, still waiting for wide guy or three way to come past the stand during daylight hours. Returned home paid my respects to all the people i know and would like to meet that laid down their lives for my friends and family and for this country i get to live in. Return to the stand where in the last hour of shooting light three way appears in the brush 70 yards away, this is it my first "real chance" at harvesting a whitetail with my bow. It couldn't have been scripted any better he followed the main trail right into my shooting lane at 20 yards and stopped broad side and i let the arrow fly, all 490 grains of kinetic chaos and slicktrick magnum through both lungs, he went 60 yards back up the trail stopped and collapsed. It was then I reached down into my jacket pocket and pulled out the necklace Mom had given me that has a small amount of grandpa's ashes in it that I take on every hunt and i whispered to him "thanks you always knew how to make a moment really special" Thanks Grandpa you had more influence on me harvesting my first whitetail with a bow than you could ever imagine
Side note, being a starving student I needed to transport my deer to my parents place 2 hours away and I only have a Protege... needless to say since its Alberta I got a few honks and waves as people passed me on the highway. To all of you thanks you're 10/10's

I saw a dude in a jeep driving down 16th Ave in Calgary, during a lot of traffic with one of these on his jeep.. He didn't have the buck he had shot wrapped or anything, just chilling out on the back probably getting dirty and muddy as hell.

I always enjoy reading stories like this. An experience that will never be forgotten. Congrats on your first archery buck, Bownsaw. There's nothing like sitting in your stand, listening to the sound of a deer walking through the forest, then finally, the unknown turns out to be a majestic buck, walking towards your shooting lane. Adrenalin rush, for sure. Thx for sharing.

Congrats on a great hunt. Very nice buck, esp. the dark horns. Even your little dog looked happy.

Congrats on your buck. But as a heads up, next time at least cover up your deer. It doesn't really look good on hunters.... even in Alberta.
