Default Sturgeon in the Fraser Valley

It has been a long and busy winter and a few months ago I ignited an idea in some friends to head out to the Fraser to fight the dinosaurs. After some research about the fishing and surrounding area, it was a no brainer - we were going to celebrate breakup chasing Sturgeon.

We went with two different guides, over two days for our group of four and both guides were equally excellent. Boats were great, and they both worked very hard to ensure we enjoyed our trip in every aspect. Both guides were very knowledgable of the fishery and keen to work; these guys love their jobs and it was great to fish with them. I will fish with both of them again, that's for sure.

Enough talk, here is our trip in pictures.

Both guides can be found here:

Great trip, I fully intend to knock Sturgeon (Lake, not White) off my list this upcoming season.

Both guides were using 150lb braid, on Shimano rods. I couldn't tell you the model of the rods unfortunatley. Shimano Talica 16 reels on the first boat with BC Sport Fishing Group.

Both guides ran the same setup. 14-22 oz sinkers on a swivel, which slides on the main line - two beads above and below the sinker swivel on the main line to prevent tangles. Main line to another swivel, and a 14' leader, also 150lb braid. Couldn't tell you the name of the hooks, I have never seen them before. They were the size of the palm of my hand.

Similar to the below pic, with an added bead above the sinker swivel.

The guides used many different kinds of bait; Dew worms, roe bags, salmon scraps, eulachon, lampray, and stink bait.

We launched at Mission, and at the dock in Harrison. For those asking where we were fishing; all over the Fraser. From Harrison Lake to where the salt begins below the Mission bridge.

That's awesome. I love fishing for those dinosaurs in the Fraser. I've only ever gone in the fall accept for one time in June. which outfit did you go out with? I usually go out with STS. How many fish were you guys hooking per day? Sorry for all the questions but as you probably know, it's an addictive fish to catch and now I'm a junkie craving my next sturgeon fix!

Never mind about the outfitters, I just noticed the links you posted.

That doesn't look like much fun at all...
I love the patterns on the heads of the smaller ones; very cool!
Epic report, TFG!

Default Fraser River Sturgeon

I have been going to the Chilliwack area for several years and I highly recommend Sturgeon. It's a blast. We have been using Chris w/Bluewater Rockies sport fishing every year. My last trip I caught a 6ft approx 300lbs and lost one that was estimated to be close to 600lbs.. best time to go is in the fall. We fish 1/2 the day for sturgeon and the other1/2 for salmon. It's a trip you will never forget..

Awesome pics TFG. I've only been once but isn't it a blast? Fishing is something special in general but out on the Fraser with a group it seems like a different world. Way to go. Couple good ones there.

Were the first pictures in the harrison river? Those are great fish you got. My wife and I are heading down tomorrow for a week of sturgeon( hopfully ). I drag my own boat down. I find it is a good way to blow the dust off it before the season opens up here. I hope this year to get into some of the ssr sturgeon in the summer. If you are into the sturgeon you should give the lower Columbia a shot in September. When we were there last year is 3 days of fishing we landed 9 over 8 feet with 3 of those close to 11 feet. We broke off 5 others.

Thanks

Adam

Nice, makes me a little home sick lol, i spent too many hours stalking sockeye and chinook in those waters, unfortunately that left no time to target sturgeon, seen some monsters and will be out that way in September to have some fun, guys have set hooks in Hope and chased them down to island 22 (near chilliwack) befote landing them, i have close family and friends that live in Mission and Chilliwack and don't get out there enough anymore...
