Default Wooden fly reel

There was a thread a while back about a wooden reel but I can't find it. As luck would have it, my uncle has one hanging on his wall but doesn't have much info on it.

Was at his cabin today, little slice of heaven to me... Will post more pics later.
This is from the balcony of his bedroom, flat bay brook - and what I wouldn't give to be up to my arse in that water chasing salmon right now...

That's not a fly reel, it's a Peetz salmon mooching reel.
I love those things, and would love to have one in my collection.
Some day I;ll run into one at a decent price....

Thank you Cat, mooching reel.

Here's another reel he has, attached to an old cane rod...

Now THAT really is cool!!
I have a very old one like that, and one made out of bakelite that is pretty cool as well.

Those Peetz reels are pretty cool. But I can tell you from experience they are the original knuckle buster reels. I remember my dad having one and I grabbed the rod when we were trolling for salmon. I thought no big deal. I was only about 12 but I had landed lots of salmon. I had a nice spring on and it took a few runs. My dad kept saying to palm the reel, palm the reel. I tried but on the third run I was winding the reel in and my fingers were on the handle. The fish took off at a hundred miles an hour when it saw the boat. I must have gotten wacked 4 times before I could pull my hand away. Ouuuuuuuuuccchhhh.

Silver, I would love to get my hands on one of those.
Could you imagine taking that, getting the guts fixed, refinishing the wood and then catching a Chinook on it?
I am thinking project here....

Nice reel.

I think you will find that an old peetz like the one in the op has no reel guts to speak of and would perform just fine with a lube and new line. refinishing an original peetz wood lower its value. I had one back in the 80's worked fine for years till I brought it back into the house and all the wood cracked due to the moisture it had absorbed. best left on the wall.

By the way love the rod. any idea what brand it is. I've always liked intermediate wraps.

Couldn't tell you Lornce, didn't take it down for closer inspection... Looks like a homemade stick tho.

I'm going to scan some articles when I get back, done by my uncle. One of them is about what looks like a speetz that dates to a king somewhere along the line. Haven't read all the articles yet but...
