What appears totally safe one minute can turn into a towering inferno in a minute.
70 thousand people were right there and thought they were safe. How can someone hundreds of miles away know more then the people on the front lines, simply by reading a few posts on social media?
Then there is the chain of command. Which one of you would want to be the one who ordered 70 thousand people to leave their homes knowing it may not be necessary?
I would trust my life to the men and women fighting that fire, they got everyone out in time, that in itself is a testament to their professionalism.

Absolutely the men and woman did a great job, and will continue to exceed expectations in order to get all out, fight tooth the nails to take the dragon on.
I too have been involved with unexpected flare ups in which we fought our way out and we learnt from those decisions.
I was just saying that the masses as individuals need to take care of themselves first then and only then can they take care of others and make the transition out of town easier.
As soon as your area is put on alert, jugs of water, food, clothes, shelter, vehicle all, filled up, spare gas etc all packed and cherished valuables. Ready to bug out
And go before the masses move.
Preparation is the key, hope all are safe, doors will open and things will get better.
Stay safe all.

The airforce isn't terribly helpful in this situation. The main army would have the equipment that could help.

I'm Working up at Shell Albian sands , we saw families rolling in by the hundreds, after our shift yesterday. It was quite strange to see children and pets walking around camp, but also made me very happy to see that these people in need had somewhere to go! About 40-50 guys from the project I'm working on gave up our rooms to make space for families in need. We were scheduled to fly out today anyways, so it was the least we could do! Hopefully everyone made it out safe! We need rain up here in a big bad way!

That is awesome, bad circumstances but a little light at the end of a tunnel is a good thing

I can't imagine what the kids are going through up there. The fear and confusion must be insane.
I hope that our government uses this as an opportunity to help put back to work the loads of people that are unemployed. It's definitely not an ideal job creation situation, but I hope they use it properly.
I'm just trying to see any possible positive sides of such a terrible event.

Excellent to hear the positive coming out of this, everyone getting out, camps clearing out workers asap to provide beds, some really good deeds went on yesterday. Cnrl was flying evacuees out for free all night, providing busses also I believe, every camp oilfeild camp is full or filling fast. Really good to see the community and province coming together so quickly when it counts.
It was crazy how everything happened. Early in the morning the fire was under control, the wind changes and within hours a pivotal albertas city is in flames. I'm still in camp, but pretty sure they will be sending us home soon to provide more room.
Again it's good to see these companies step up.

CNRL's actions should be posted on Facebook, MSM will never give the evil oil companies credit for anything...

11pm last night my Moms cousin got the alert from Vivint that the house was burning down. I can't imagine the feeling of helplessness these people are going through. Hopefully over the next few days there will be avenues to donate and volunteer, it's going to be a long road.

They are going to start shift evacuees down to calgary and put them in the post secondary facilities. Since they are sitting empty as school is out we have lots of open space.
Calgary is sending 1 fire department member up to see how we can best deploy all our resources.
So hang tight guys help is coming.
Guys to the North you are to stay put today....... still.
Military is still 2 days out.
they say the redtape needs to be cleared for that to be lifted to get them on the ground.
If you have a pet currently missing in #YMM, call 780 762 3636. Staff will log your information & send assistance if possible. #YMMFire
IF YOU STILL HAVE ANIMALS IN YOUR HOME AND YOU ARE NOT HOME PLEASE contact Pulse 780 743 7000 or RMWB by-law at 780 788 4200 #ymmfires
It's #InternationalFirefightersDay. So fitting given what's happening here. Going to be a hard day on the front lines. Thanks.

I was born and raised up there. Still can't believe this is happening. Also the ufa in athabasca has set up so people without a card lock can pay debit for fuel.

According to a friend that made it out last night, Big D's Delivery Company out of Edmonton, was apparently running up and down the highway handing out food , water, and fuel to the people that were stranded.
