Guess.
I've also learned about some great backpacking spots that I would love to try out this summer.

I think we are also in between seasons so people like to keep in touch and discuss whatever just to stay in touch (nothing wrong with that). Once the ice melts we will be back to more fishing type of posts.

Having moved here recently, it was nice to read about some of the shows that are around and the comments from folks that went to them. It was great info as to what to expect when we arrived. I did have to search for the threads on the shows - not a big deal but maybe a separate forum for them would help folks get to learn the dates and locations for them and give the AO sponsors that attend them a chance to do some schmoozing.
Same goes for the info on shops and suppliers, really found that useful as well.
Definitely found the topics on the different lakes, rivers and streams very useful, I now have a bucket list of places to try over the next few years.
Love seeing pics of the "catch of the day" from folks. Love reading about successes with new equipment and I appreciate the heads up on equipment problems as well.

It was interesting to say the least. The trip through the mountains was fun roads being closed then open then closed again Rain, Snow and winds that you could not walk against. First fishing day arrived with 60 k winds and rain.
the second day woke up to 8" of wet snow it went down hill from there. The ice had only been off a day so the Bass were as closed mouthed as can be and holding on bottom. It turned into more of a recon trip then a fishing trip but talked to some locals got some good information did some running around and seen some other lakes frozen but not solid. Already have the next trip planed
Just hope to stay out of the emer.room next time

firstly i learned this is a great form. then I learned im a liberal. (jk) tons of good stuff to be gleaned off the AO form. I went over lots of old threads to get a past history of certain lakes. learned some good hints. I learned some of our fly tiers are very skilled and kind enough to give flys to a fly swap. I learned that its easy to let my emotions get the best of me. I learned moderaters can be stern but understanding. I learned gull lake contains more than pike. met some good folks. I learned there are various (wrong) options, on every subject known to man on the AO form. I enjoy some of the heated discussions on the form but dislike when the name calling gets the best of some folk. all in all a great resources /community of outdoors folk.

Knowledge
..I have found this FORUM to be quite informative, yes you do have to sift thru the nonsense and carrying on but these are the same old tired individuals everytime !!
..I find out about different lakes that I want to check out, the pic's tell me about the potential size of the fish and that there are still good quality fish in those lakes left.
I have never expected someone to give up a waypoint on their own honey hole, I never expected someone to tell me the lures to use, I never expected to be taken by hand and have them bait my hook!
That's why I go hunting and fishing is to figure all that out myself and that's what MOST Rewarding about having success in the field or the H20.!!
Just my two cents!

honestly. i believe there's a lot of guys that post in the fishing forum that have never wet a line. i truly believe this, and contribute that to the useless threads and polls you speak of. i'm not saying a non-fisher person shouldn't post and ask questions here. lots use the forum as a learning tool and that's great. i like to add advise and tips where i can. you have to wonder though about some and exactly what their intentions are here. there's always the general discussion section to lose yourself in. go there and generally discuss your feelings. we fish.
just what i've found over the winter here, and i don't think i'm the only one. you asked.
oh. and as for what i've learned in the past 6 months. other peoples fish bleed too and that it's normal and ok. hooks are sharp and it happens. i wasn't completely sure about this, as i do like to keep my hooks super sharp.

Well, i've learned that less time on the forum = more time on the water. Can't catch fish on the internet!
Get out fishing people.

I learnt that a few will contribute, a few will help, a few will criticize, a few will jump to assumptions, many will ask, many will surf, but the best ones are met fishing.
And instead of wasting time surfing, I can out fish most with a little experimentation....(just kidding)....but today I (guidance/equipping family & friends) we caught fish when others had trouble (I fully helped all who asked)
Today's fishing

fishing is alot of fun and there are some real enthusiasts out there.
CO's have a tough job.
as with all fishermen dont come here expecting to be given all the best tips/tricks and places to fish, how to hold your rod, what bait to use, etc.
we need slot sizes for fish retention/harvesting (no one has given a good reason why we shouldnt)
there arent alot of places to fish in southern alberta or the area's are quite small.
many area's are overfished or in some state of repair by SRD regarding at least one species.
there is a need for conservation (see above)
land development continues and will always be a threat to access and preservation of our fishing areas (southern areas).
there is pollution in the waters and you should be aware of it before you eat.
if you catch a trophy fish you should consider yourself very lucky.
if you catch a trophy fish you should take a picture and put it back.

He came by the house weeks ago and was a nervous wreck. Grabbed a heavy sturgeon rod out of my garage and said suckers are spawning, must kill them all. Then he left with a midget driving his truck
