Default What is AB's premier SportFish?

Ok, so a poll can only have 10 options, so I've had to exclude several species which some members may have wanted to see here.

I excluded them based on their small avg size, or lack of fighting ability (dont worry I included brown trout anyways).

Feel free to comment on your choice and more importantly, why you chose it.

I voted pike mostly because they are the fish that most people will catch in the Northern waters I fish.....and I love fishing for them especially on the fly.

I would also classify sturgeon as being up there...that is one I still have to get under my belt, hooked one last year just wasn't able to land it.

If I were to guess, I would think that pike would probably take 1st place. I personally don't target them though.

Also, apologies for not including Brook Trout.

I said pike just because they can be found over almost the entire province. Not to mention im sure there are more bodies of water in AB that hold pike, than any other species. They are also a beautiful fish and a great fighter. I love pike!

I chose Rainbow because you can find them in puddles throughout allot of Alberta. Some of the puddles even have a fancy sprinkler in em.

almost unfair because I would rate cutts king of the mountains, rainbows king of the foothills and pike on the prairies and the north.

My vote is for sturgeon.IMO they are the hardest fighting fish in AB.They are the biggest.Nothing like a 4 1/2 foot sturgeon jumping out of the water some times more than once.

I voted rainbow pike is a close second, but there are a few fish on the list that I have never fished for including sturgeon so my opinion may change if I get a chance to fish for them.

Bass????? Where?

For me, it's cutthroat. Not so much because of the fish themselves as much as where they are found. LOVE fishing mountain lakes and streams you have to hike to. And they are native too.

I would like to pick all of the above!...

The wonderful thing here is that we have so many options!...

Some days I feel like catching rainbows in a pothole on a fly,
Some days going for pike just to catch a decent sized fish
Some days catching grayling out of tea-stained muskeg waters
Some days walleye out of a river with a pickeral rig...
Some days going for a hike and catching cutthroat in the mountains
Some days catching a rainbow or brown with a ciityskyline nearby

Hard to pick my favorite as on each day it depends on what I have a hankering for or what my boys want to do that day!...

As for the premier sportfish I would choose golden trout. The experience is incredible. A beautiful hike, lots of fish, and the most beautiful fish alberta has to offfer IMO. They are hard to get to and when you do you may only bump into one or two other people. I love fishing for them and they have my vote for the premier sport fish.

Smile I'm surprised.

Alberta has some of the best trout water in the world. The Bow river Rainbows are wold famous. I'm a bit surprised any other fish made the list.

Learn something every day.
