Default Moose hunting 418

Hey all,

This year I drew a antlered moose tag for 418.
To the best of my knowledge and having asked some friends who guided that area for a long time I don’t have a snowballs chance in hell of finding a moose in 418. Has anybody hunted this area for moose before, or seen any sign in recent years of bulls in that area? I only have enough time this year for one big hunt and if that’s a crapshoot then I’d rather take my week elsewhere.

Do you have horses? If so I'd head out there right now and start calling.

Can I ask what about 418 tickled your fancy for Moose?

The odds seem low. The 2021 Harvest reports show 0 moose were taken in 418.

No access to horses, I had spent a little time in the past few years so I guess when I saw 418 on the draw list I must’ve recognized it and hit it without really thinking. Makes sense how I was able to draw a tag since I’m probably the only shmuck in the province applying in the area

Sounds like there is some decent deer up there if you walk in North East of the Campground

I’m sure the wolves and cats have changed that

I think there are two tags for that entire zone. I've hunted and ridden there for one hell of a long time and never seen one. there must have been more at one time because we found old weathered antlers on several occasions. Having said that, someone a few years ago, bagged one on the Ribbons , across the river from the Ya Ha tinda and had to argue with a grizz over ownership of the carcass.

Just spent the last 4 weeks hunting there. If there’s a moose there I’ll eat my shirt.

Nah, the Stewards of the Land wouldn't kill what amounts to an endangered species in that area. I remember driving up the Williams Creek road and you couldn't help but see three or four. Not anymore.

We had a tag in 416 last year, saw 3 bulls and a few cows, never got a chance to connect, I heard 417 is better?

I haven’t hunted there for years but I have seen them up from the bighorn campground before and down by the red deer river away from the crowds but as I said that was a while ago. I’ve also seen some promising country near eagle lake but haven’t gone searching for moose back there. It’s definitely not the best moose zone and they aren’t thick by any stretch but they are there.
