Coyote worth.

So the other day I caught a coyote.. It was a nice and big.. I skinned, washed and fleshed it.. today I turned it around to find it being about 10 pounds with really no fur at all.. Just heavy wool. I was wondering if anyone else has seen that.. Are they worth anything? And why, instead of fur is it covered in heavy wool?

It has a bad case of fugly! A couple of years ago I sent in two woolly ones and they graded as Semi’s. I think that I got $30 each for them. They weren’t nearly that bad though. If you send it in I’d be interested in knowing what you get for it.

I'm debating if I should send it to the sale or sell it to a private buyer. We have a few driving around here come trapping season.

Had one last year that I thought was ok until I started to skin it. I realized it had dreadlocks all over its back. Not nice. Im guessing I got it before the rest of the disease did.

If you’re questioning the quality I would expect a fur buyer would feel the same. They see a lot more fur than you or I.

Coyotes can be like women.... Some are beautiful and others... Well have a good personality... send it in you need 1 or 2 to pull the avg down... brush her up nice and send her in you put the time in get some cash for it..

I didnt throw it out , I brought it home and a fellow AO member is using it for trim on some mittens . I dont like to leave em in the field either as it seems to trains the birds to eat em . I've had a bit of luck before with the same problem where I was able to salvage the hide and tho it went as damaged it was in much better shape than this one .Can't sew it up when that big of a hole is there .

there was an eagle sitting on one of mine when we went out to check yesterday.........rotten bugger was picking holes in it. hole in the side of the neck/head is big enough it can't be sewn, but for an experiment, i'll send it in and find out what they think about it at auction time.. then i'll know what to do next time.

Yup, your damaged coyote was worth anywhere from $50 to $150 depending upon who was fixing it.

It is said that some fur graders fear certain individual's sewing craft...

Meanwhile the lice/mange dawg is worth $1.50 to $15.00 depending upon which sale and how much demand.

Back thru the years when I only rifle hunted, there was a a lot creative sewing happening in the fur shed. It's amazing what kind of damaged can be hid or least minimized with the know how. Now with the uptake of trapping it isn't as necessary as it used to be.

Wish I had read that last week. Nice prime coyote, fleshing an a hurry and flipped my knife to the sharp side doing the belly, not watching what I was doing...

Do you start at the points or intersections or just go from one end to the next?

Whats your experience with the eagle torn dogs Marty ? Softball sized hole in the flank . Ive had 2 in the same set on consecutive checks ..

The first thing that I do is wet the fur and move it away from the cut so i’m Not dealing with fur where i’m Sewing. For a jagged rip like this I lay it out and plan what goes where. I start at one end and keep checking that things line up as I sew and adjust my stitches as needed. It’s hard to explain without actually doing it and explaining as I go. There are lots of little tricks that I learned from putting up shot dogs. Do enough of them and it gets easier and quicker to do a good job.

I sewed two more tonight. One ripped about 12” when I was turning it fur out this morning the other only had about 4” of hide behind the ears holding the head on. The stitches looked similar to what’s in the picture and you’d have a very hard time feeling the stitches through the fur even if you knew where they were. Time consuming though.

I wouldn’t have bothered with that one, Cam. The hide on the stomach is so thin that you’d spend 45 minutes doing a decent job and all the stitches would tear out when you put it on a board or turned it fur out. Potential time waster IMO.

on rifle shot ones where the edges are torn and messed up with blood shot etc, i usually try to cut a diamond shape to it and sew it. Watch a video of furriers cutting and sewing damaged pelts you'd be surprised at what you can make look good.

Bit of an old post already, but on these sew-job coyotes; what does that typically do to grading & pricing?

This years the first I'll be shipping direct, skinning everything vs. selling whole to buyers... anyway, I have a few that I've sewn up but haven't the slightest clue what to expect for grading change due to sew-jobs (or if there even is a downgrade being sewn?)

Sure would like some feedback on that.

All depends on how much the hide is damaged ..the eagle torn one had nothing to patch together..so was not worth the effort. A good sew job will sometimes go unnoticed but it has to be well done .
