When filleting lakers, not only making them boneless, but trimming the fat is a must. There is fat along the back, fat along the belly, and fat down the center along with the grey meat. Trim this off and you will have some great tasting fish.

My father in law filleted a laker then invited us over for supper, he didn't trim it up. Then I filleted a laker and we invited them over for dinner. Night and day difference in taste. A little extra time and care while filleting will make all the difference when your dealing with lakers.
All my lakers are smoked ....
fileted boneless skin left on belly fat removed skin slit and smoke

That's the way to smoke'em

Lake is full of little fellas, like I mentioned earlier if this keeps up and they do indeed grow the lake will be full of big fish. Unbelievable how many you can catch in a day now.

Agree in a couple years fishing should be amazing. Not that it is not fantastic now.

We went there yesterday to go camping and spend a few days fishing, didn't go so well. My wife broke her ankle while on the way (she tripped on the side of the road), so after 2.5 hours in Lac La Biche hospital getting X-rays and a cast we went on to the Provincial Park. Set up camp, had supper and a nice campfire; went to bed about 10:00, it started raining - hard. 1 1/2 inches by noon today, and extremely windy. Trees and branches down. We drove to the ramp to see what it looked like. Bad, very bad. Waves washing over the dock. A guy had tried launching, looked like about an 18 footer; what was he thinking? No way to boat comfortably, let alone try to fish!!! Looked like they were having a heck of a time getting the boat back on the trailer. Hope he didn't damage it too much - it looked like it was wedged up tight against the dock and taking a real pounding. We went back to the site and packed up and left. The forecast was for more rain and heavy winds from the north north-east through tomorrow.

We drove over by the marina to see how it looked there - WOW! Waves were breaking over the break-wall!!! Unreal (and I say that having spent many, many hours fishing the big water of the Great Lakes - Erie and Huron / Georgian Bay).

I don't think there will be any fishing reports from this weekend.

Nothing like fishing in six foot plus waves yet alone launch and recover your boat! Can't fix stupid, lucky they only get a damaged boat could have been a lot worse!

I'm busting out a whole bunch of OT hours right now to bank for when ice fishing begins - was gonna go out somewhere tomorrow but surprise surprise they called in the guy that never turns down the extra pay, lol.

I think by next weekend I'll have gone out.

2016 Season is just around the corner for ice fishing Cold Lake.
With this warm weather the main lake is normally open water.
Heard its been windy there the last few days. May freeze one day and open the next. If any locals in the area please post a few pictures of open water.
Be safe and play safe !

Just heard today Cold Lake is fully iced over . Its only around 2 inches on the main lake.
Should be able to walk on it next weekend if it stays cold.

This should get the itch back !

Fished French bay today. Only 4" of ice in 60' of water. Snow is heavy enough to weigh down ice as flood water has started. Most walking out with the odd bike on ice in the shallower water. Be careful just enough ice to get in trouble with machines

you don't need a sonar/flasher. i fished last year without one just fine.....but you should use the cold lake special and jig just off the bottom.
