Default My pets are eating me out of house and home.

My mealworm farm is going like gang busters. The perch better watch out come December. They love potatoes...but where can I buy cheap bulk fine brown wheat bran?

Now I need to make a sieve to seperate the worms out.

Who else has a mealworm farm going and how are you enjoying it? With the price of mealworms going to $10 / 100... I think I am saving money. At the very least I am not having to hit the pet store regularly.

I was thinking of a 50 pound bag of chick starter that you can buy from feed mills.

I looks and tastes like ALL Bran.

If you want flour like bran stuff, I have also seen it sold from feed mills.

Farmers call it "chop"

You did not take me up on the offer to perch fish last winter. Hopefully you can come and use some of my mealworms this winter. The perch are much bigger now.

Cheers.

I buy the 454g bags of bran at Wal-Mart for my farms...Here I just put in a carrot from the garden for them...Since I started the farm last year I’m on the third generation...This summer I fed them to the birds...The blue-birds loved them and one robin at 15 of them before he flew away...

Smile Seed cleaning plants?

I know nothing about raising worms. But if they will eat weed seeds they are all right by me.

If there is no seed cleaning plant near by try one of the few remaining elevators that are on the prairie.

We have a Bulk Barn in Edmonton. They have almost every thing in bulk and fairly cheap. Maybe you have one near you. I would bet there is one near you and they will have it or something quite simmilar that you can use.

Down here the large mealworms at the pet store went from $7.77 per 100 to $9.98 per 100.

Hopefully the price comes down...but I still prefer now to raise my own. Always a fresh supply. Easy to raise.

Raising your own worms is like tying your own flys! Even if it's not a whole lot cheaper, it increases the satisfaction factor on every fish you catch!
Good on you Kevin!

Not good when it comes to fishing, to busy at work and with some other things, not enough time to fish. Hope to catch up on it during winter. You guys still slaying perch in Sundance? Will there be any left for ice season? I hope you guys invite me at least couple times as my friend moved out from Sundance

Hey Sundance - if you are looking for ground wheat bran, there are a few feedmills in Calgary area that likely would have some, but not sure if they would have any in bags, likely only in bulk (by that I mean you would have to take 1 tonne). They may bag 25kg off for you if you talk nice....

Landmark Feeds - Strathmore (south on wheatland trail) Phone: 403-934-6024
COOP Feeds - 1020 - 26 St. NE Calgary Phone: 403-531-6656
Feed Rite - Linden - 403-546-4433
Viterra Feed Products - Olds - 403-556-3395

Its not that uncommon...especially amongst those who have pets that eat them, or like to feed them to birds. I used to have a colony going back in '83-'86...was producing about 8000/week at its peak....really easy to do.

I started mine from two tubs from the pet store. I figured they were most likely to be disease free.

I would not bring new ones into the farm now...as it has been going well. I need to buy some stuff tonight.

They are going to be so excited...them little wormies. New food, new bedding, clean tub... and soon a nice ride on a tobaggan.

That was how I started, too....after a few months, the stores were getting all their supply from me.

You may find after 12+ months that you want to occasionally introduce new genetics....a safe way is to start a couple of smaller, 'quarantine' colonies, and after a couple of months to determine that they are healthy, dump them into the main colony...it is a great way to keep the colony healthy and producing well long-term.

Incidentally, if you find yourself with more mealworms than you can use, they are pretty good sauteed with veg, or in a stir-fry....low in fat, cholesterol-free, high in protein, crunchy with a nutty sort of flavour.

In elementary school we had a different foods day. I tried honey ants and fried meal worms. They did taste nutty and were good done in garlic butter. Still...I prefer a good steak or side of salmon...but in a pinch I will always remember that.

Psst....I have a reputation to uphold...and lately there are some much better perch fishermen coming over and making me look like a newbie.
