'Bout Frickin' Time! Walleye.

Finally got a legal sized Walleye last night (and had a tape measure handy to prove it!).

I have caught a few over the years that I have been "sure" were legal, but without a tape, I have always let them go. While out looking for trout last night a landed a couple of Eyes, and one was a couple centimetres over the minimum.

Only took 5 years...

Will be supper for tonight. Thinking Fish&Chips.

Truth is, there are a few walleye in the river, but not many. They have been swept over the spillway at the dam, just upstream. Only started catching them two years ago after a sizable flood, and after last years mess I am sure a few more came over.

Water is really high in all the southern rivers right now: at peak run-off levels, and have been for almost 2 months! My favourite river is back up to +-90 cubic metres p/second! Should be down to 20-30 CMS by now.

Mixed up some batter and deep fried that walleye.... OMG. Yummy!

I kept looking at those sad saran-wrapped Eye's in Superstore, but was afraid I would get a bad one and then I would think they did not taste good. Glad I waited!

I think I may be spending a bit more time putting a few more of these in the pan.

LoL. Sorry WJ, not sure if you were serious.

No secret really, already had a couple PMs from people who had it figured out. But it is limited in area, and the number of fish around, so no need to make it even more crowded. In fact, this is only the second or third legal sized Eye I have caugt there, and the first time I have had a tape! It ain't exactly a "honey hole".

The reservoir is MUCH more productive for walleye and pike.

Fwiw, the area has a bait ban (though it does 't stop the Hudds from showing up with a shrimp ring!) except for maggots for a couple weeks a year.

Sure hope the water comes soon.

Well I dont know where it is....so its a secret to me! I have a good idea though....eitherway i was'nt gooning yaa or nothing like that,I really liked your photo and the clean water..and its sort of a secret walleye spot

wow are you serious?? i have never seen walleyes being caught on the fly before. thats awsome man, this gives me a second goal for this year. first is to get a goldeye on the fly for the first time then look into this walleye on the fly. sounds very intresting.

There is someone on here who posted a few weeks back with a video of him catching Eyes on dry flies. Think he is in the peace country, and the water did not look that clear.

And if you think that is crazy, another guy posted last year IIRC with pics of a couple Burbot caught on the fly in the Bow. Now that is cool!

I think for the most part the trick with walleye (and most other fish) is getting the fly in front of them. Think fast sinking lines with lively flies (I like - and have great luck with a dubbed body wooly bugger; no body hackle cause it just gets wrecked on the first bite).

yeah i saw the post on the burbot on the fly from the bow river and thought that was cool. i didn't think the walleyes would take drys, man whats next sturgeons on the fly? lol

speaking of weird fish on flies, there was someone who caught a Mola Mola (or a big ocean Sunfish) on a fly. Used a green-fuzz that looked like a bunch of algae or something. The mola mola ran off with the line just like any other salt-water game fish, except this one looks like a big fat plate, and weights a couple hundred pounds.
