Default A Glorious Night to pick Dew Worms!!

With the first good rain of the Spring and the grass being sparse, it was the time to go picking dew worms.

They were ought in huge numbers, and the size was impressive.

Hope everyone else took advantage of the chance to stock up on bait.

I must have picked 100 this morning when I drove the kids to school I thought they where sticks on the road at first. Some monster ones.
For the worm experts out there are the smaller ones just younger or a different type of crawler ??

We used to have a red "angler" worm. Great for trout. Have not seen them in years though.

.....add to that, how do you store them so they stay fresh and alive?

Thanks,

Thanks,
Worm bedding from Canadian tire works great in a styrofoam container. Keep in a cool place. I keep them in my spare fridge and they live year round in there. If you don’t want to spend $ put them in loose soil, but then you need to constantly feed them. Don’t use potting soil with fertilizer, it will kill them. This morning around 3 am, was perfect for picking, just scooped them up off the roads.

Different worms. Small dew worms have the the darker heads. The smaller ones are Soil Dwelling worms, Dew worms are called Deep Burrowing ( Anecic ) worms.

It’s funny one areas o the road has some great big ones. Then all the rest of the street are the small ones. I found a very effective way to quickly pick them as I was getting tires of slimy fingers. Coghlans tent whisk is the ticket. Comes with a small broom and dustpan. Just lightly sweep them into the pan, once the pan is full dump them into you worm bucket. I use a worm box that I got when I was very young its got to be 25 years old or more. It has metal frame that hold the walls and bottom in place but the walls are made from a dense coconut fibre type material. When you soak it in water it hold the moisture for days In the shade. I can’t find them online anyplace, looks like they sell a foam one now.
