Default Needles

Broke a needle sewing the legs closed on a beaver hide. Dug out the new needle I just received from Halford’s and found that they would not pierce into the hide, and when I used a pair of pliers to force it through I had to use the pliers to pull the needle through the fleshy side of the hide. Took me 30 minutes to stitch 3 legs closed. They are 15ga needles and was like trying to push a nail through the hide. Anyone else having this problem or have any ideas about using these needles. Any one find a supplier of needles that work on beaver hides. Any ideas on making the needle slide through the hide.

Jackie told be that he just went a little way into the membrane when he was sewing the leg holes shut but I never bothered. I just mail them shut when i’m Putting them on the board and I still get top lots.

Have you tried using a Glover’s Needle? I found out that ordinary sewing needles don’t work well at all.

Default Needles

I take a ordinary needle, break off the point, then on a grinder, sharpen
on 2 sides to make a chisel edge rather than a point. When pushing into
the hide it makes a tiny slit, which allows the rest of the needle
and string to follow easily.

I always go to a drugstore that carries vet supplies and they sell sutures with the half round needle attached. The suture needle goes thru beaver skins, or any other skin, like butter. Great for sewing up legs and any other damage.
