Moose ideas 2008
Hey Guys,
Tossin around some ideas on a moose hunt for 2008. My wife is sitting at a P4 right now and I'm a P5. I think I'll just 999 my application and wait and possibly draw Wainwright or another area in the future. Right now I'm doing some thinking on what might work for 2008 for my wife to get her a moose. Looking for something with high moose numbers, trophy quality is not overly important. I was looking pretty hard at Grande Prairie area but not sure about winter die-off and how numbers are looking up there as of last year.
Any ideas on general areas that might work to draw? Would like to find an early season hunt.....willing to travel anywhere in Alberta.....
Sorry...I hate these sorts of threads but just wanted to get some ideas tossed around in the 'early planning' stages.....

I would not count on the Grande Prairie area.I had a tag this year and saw next to nothing for moose. The year before they were all over the place.

Thats kinda what I was worried about with the die-off.....lookin at plan #2 for now.....
Not for sure that we'll do a moose hunt, but tossing the idea around as well as elk draw options, WMU 410 draw options, etc, etc, etc....gotta love the plannin stages!

Moose
Try WMU 354 south of Little Smoky. They are thick in there.

2008 moose
We called in several bulls this fall in 356 along the Kakwa. I think the moose were harder hit North, East and West of GP. This was year 4 for us hunting that zone and every year we have seen a few monster bulls, plus the scenery is hard to beat.

354 and 356 were devastated, not to say some days and spots can make you wonder. I look at the outfitters and they had a tough season. One has gone 100% on moose for 9 years, this fall he went 50%. He hunts 354, 356. Gordy Klassen's (the president of the Trappers Assoc) trap line is in 354 and he couldn't believe the devastation of the winter kill. He and many others are lobbying for greatly slashed tag numbers for 08 up here.

Hunted 346 again this year, got my bull quickly but more luck than brains. Couldn't believe how much time and country we hunted to try and fill a friend's tag, same zone. Bulls were not where they always have been, general numbers way down, but we blamed the overwhelming amount of wolf sign we saw. They're starting to show up down in the lower farmed land now (the moose, that is) but still not in the numbers we're used to seeing. Wouldn't bother me to see a complete 2 year closure. On the plus side, wolf season has forced itself on us and that'll keep us busy for a while.

Re; 356
There is no argueing with science but we didn't notice any shortage of moose in the Southern part of 356 this fall. Almost every drainage and valley we hunted held good numbers of moose.

Lots of interesting comments re. moose populations in certain areas. I know 356 was one of the areas I was considering before the die-off....now I'm still in the deciding stage of exactly where we'll go to give her the best chance of filling a tag....

If you're looking to try for a parkland moose, I could likely help you out. Not sure if a 4 or 5 will get drawn , though.

Ya a 4 probably wont in most zones....I have a P5 and am waiting for a draw in a few years but we just want to get some meat on the ground and have her shoot a bull....she's pretty pumped about it.

lots of moose in 312, you live in the deep south right, so it's a day trip for you there. I took a 49" moose two years ago, there's lots of bulls and access is pretty good. Tag every third year.

We have hunted 312 in the past....good zone and we had some pretty decent permission. Cant say I hunted any crownland in the zone, but might have to look into that as well as an option. Guess I'm busy lookin north and not even thinkin about 312 and the close zones around home....

Other than 328, any comments on zones 339, 338, 337, 340, etc?
Trying to really decide if we'll go NORTH, stay south, or go somewhere in the middle....

YAh know.. You could come with us.
I know there is still the odd moose around up in 521. We will get one, but we also will have to work a bit. Especially if size is not a issue.
I would actually like to see what calling moose is like.
Also, I know we could get her onto a bear
The camp would be Dad, Willy, I and you 2.
It could be some fun.
Willy will own you at UNO.
