Default Muir Lake opening day

May 1 on Monday. What are the chances of finding open water?

I drive by it daily. I'll post a status update once I'm home tonight, after I've checked it.

Yeah, i'm still holding off this year until some of those fish are getting closer to their former selves. Water levels should be good when the ice is gone.

If you do catch something sizable this spring, post back.

Did the trout get up to any decent size towards the end of last season? I live around the corner from it and will also be keeping an eye on it so will report.

I will be on there soon after the 1st so will let you know how I get on.

Sounds good. I saw a couple of deep ponds today (sort of barometers for me) that were completely ice free so I'm more optimistic for Monday than I was as of yesterday!

Didn't look promising when I went by a few days ago.

Ice around some of the larger potholes out west seems to be thinning out.

If we get a couple days of double digits, night time temps above zero and a bit of wind there should be some open water by Monday.

If I make it out that way this weekend I'll post conditions.

There's 100-150' of open water around the aerator, and 10-15' of water between the shore and the ice, as of last night.

They don't get to their former selves unless you catch the 100 times over though, drag them up onto shore, and hold them out of the water for 20 pictures. How else do they build up muscle?

Hey Weedy1,

I thought that you gave up lake fishing a while back, said it was too easy (to quote Doc)!

By the way, where is Doc (Mike) these days, haven't seen him for a while? Mind you, I never fished Muir at all last year.

No, he was incorrect. I said I was tired of having to teach him how to catch the big ones and fishing with him because he sucks.

Mike is still doing what he's does best (sucking) and living out west close to Muir.

As for me I've been working on tying flies that won't attract fish so that next time Doc and I are fishing together the competition will be even.

Thanks for the update, looks like late next week should be good.

Or maybe sooner if Weedy and Doc fish together, the hot air would do wonders

Spent some time at a little pothole lake west of Edmonton dodging ice chunks and trying to catch a few fish. Still a couple more days til ice free.

Sure felt good chucking a few flies after what seemed like a very lonnnnng winter.

8 inches with a raggedy tail so they've stocked the lake .
A few tail splashes ,this girl fell to a damsel nymph down deep.
Tight lines

I got a little 8" trout last night off the dock. Were you out in a boat?

I fished Monday morning for a couple of hours , no hits around the island so I think they might have not migrated that far I got it 20 feet off the dock from my boat .

Default Muir today

Spent the day at Muir today, along with 6 canoe full of loud teenager boys! So much for my quiet time. Tried fishing on the other side of the island where it used to be good for at least one big bow. Nothing...not even a bite. The water is dirty murky and not one fish appeared on the screen. Over by the boat launch the little ones where jumpy and happy to bite on any dry you presented to them! So got 4 little ones and missed another 4 or so. I don't think I'll be going back there again anytime soon. But on the bright side it was a beautiful day to start my fishing season.
