It all depends on the person, and the load being used.I started using a 12 gauge at 12 years of age.

I shoot 350 12ga 6 shot at trapshooting competitions all the time.
During hunting season I shoot about 30 2 shot 12ga shots a day while waterfowl hunting. I am only 12 years old.

Autoloaders kick less than others. You can start with 2 3/4" and grow into the 3" if needed. My son started with a 12ga auto and had no issues. His buddy bought a Rem express pump and you can tell it bothers him to shoot. A good fit makes a world of difference also.

If the gun fits the young shooter thats the biggest thing. Then work up to more powerful loads as needed. Some will love it and some will hate it.

I was talking to a buddy of mine the other day. His son does quite a bit of trap shooting. He was telling me that he had shot 400 rounds of 12 guage ammo in two days. He will be 12 in a month or so and not a big kid, average maybe. His dad couldn't remeber the model of shotgun but thought it was a browning single shot. Sounded like it had an adjustable stock to fit smaller shooters.

400rounds in 2 days!! I haven't shot that many in 10 years! My boys are so getting into that next year.
