Default 22-250 Loads

Hey there...I just ordered a Savage Model 11 22-250 and am unsure on what to shoot for a load size. The barrell has a "1 in 12" twist and is a 22" barrell. I would like to shoot Winchester Ballistic Tips just from the results I have got from my 7MM Mag. The guy at the store recomended a 35 Grain saying 50 grain would be too much but when I did some research on the internet it was saying to shoot a 60-65 grain load. I may have access to a buddies hand loader but would prefer to stick with factory loads if possible. What do you guys shoot and what would you recommend?

Thanks for your input.
DR

Default 22-250

hey there i too just picked up a 22-250 but a predator model and i just tested out my first test batch of handloads. turned out great. using a 55gr sierra blitzking going 3600 fps out of a 22" barrel with 12" twist i managed to group 1/2 moa with a rest. now i got a base load and i can try to tinker with more accuracy, but you should have no problem with a 55 or 60 grain bullet.

You'll likely have your best results with 50 - 55 gr bullets.

thanks guys...a buddy i talked to was concerned that a 50 grain might drop too much....i know you said you were getting 3600 fps with a 55 grain...would a 50 grain be comparable to that?

55 grain bullet would be ideal as a varmint bullet. Anything lighter, you will gain fps at the muzzle but with the compromise of increased drop and energy at long range. Once you go heavier than 55 gr, you start to get into 'game' bullets and LR match bullets.

That said, I use 50 gr Blitzkings in mine, but only because they shoot so well and because I have so darned many of them. I will switch to 55's once I run out.

Stay away from the 35's, they are meant for the Hornet.

I am new to the reloading game but have someone who is an expert at it so I'm not exactly sure what powder...I would like to stay with factory loads just for the convenience but could reload if I needed to...would you have any suggestions on powder...I was looking at a barnes varmit grenade for a bullet because we are going to try and tan the hides and dont want total destruction...as I said I would like to shoot the Winchester ballistic tips as long as they don't leave a crater in the pelt...thanks for your input
