Default Bow river this weekend?

Hey I am just wondering if the river will be fishable on saturday? With this cold snap I was thinking it could be like a slurpee but wasn't sure.

I was also wondering if I could get any tips or tricks on what to use on the fly rod to start with and also where A good place to park the vehicle would be? I have never fished the bow and am not sure where to start.

Thanks,

Nate

Don't go on the ice. The recent cold weather has brought the edges of the ice out again and with the warm weather forecast for the weekend, the edges will be very thin and prone to breaking off. Stand on solid ground if you do go out.

Ya winch me and Erik (guitarplayingfish) are coming in. He is selling his belly boat and has never been to bass pro. So we will be hitting up bass pro for a bit and then hopefully get a chance at the bow since we are both new to that river and really want to get a brown.

Ya I am pretty sure that me and eric are coming on saturday. He is meeting a board member to sell his belly boat and we will be checking out bass pro since he has never been there. After that we will hit up the bow with the fly rods for a few hours before we have to head back. I was thinking either the deerfoot bridge on the far southend on our way out of town or head to the carseland area if either of those is open for fishing right now. Makes it easier on us with navigating through calgary since neither of us know the city all to well.

WHD to Carsland is open all year....which is both places you speak of....im doubtful the water on the upside of Carsland is open.
Call me tomorrow in the afternoon ..I'll take a drive to fish creek and check the ice flows....if im in town i'll happily escort you guys to the fish creek...if not i'll get you detailed directions
big golden stones...rubber legged if possible..sorry i dont have any tied right now....you know who took them all..lol
i'll map you to some great spots down there......bring big indicators and lots of splitshot.
Buddy told me he has been getting alot of nice fish on rapalas too

i know im gonna get flamed by purist flyfishers....but i use those bright orange styrofoam bobbers with the metal clips.....cheap, easy to adjust and tough.
they are about 3/4 of a inch around

I think I might pick up a few different sizes of those new phil rowley slip bobber type indicators. They have a snap type system to hold your line tight and then when you set the hook they snap open and slide down your line so you can reel farther in when using a long leader.

just got home from the city -32 in the toks right now. the river has been a slurpee the last few times i've driven across the bridge on the deerfoot in the daylight. think monday afternoon was the last time. has only gotten colder since. maybe a tad better up @ fish creek but don't hold your breath nate. i'm chopping too, just down care to mess with the ice, both in the river and in my guides. soon my friend soon.

Default The latest

If you think you will be flamed , I like the red & white 1.5 in. bobber , its the only thing that will hold up a # 8 len thompson.

Fri....8 am ...lots of small floating ice at deerfoot bridge , south of 22x ....only -27 here ( - 44 ) wind chill.....Theres a couple of spots in

fish creek on west side of river , good flow .....you can fish the inside of the ice usually....I will pm my cel....could be OK tomorrow afternoon...W101

There will be lots of slush and ice after this cold snap it will take a couple days of warmer weather to clear up. Sometimes a guy can fish around the ice burgs but if there is lots of slush you wont get a fly through it.

Im hoping to hit the river on Sat as well, prob go in the southland area usually some good open water. I really like those thingamobobbers that are on the market now 1/2" or an 1" size. Better bring the spinning rod too just in case as the guides and fly line freezes pretty quick i find, rendering the trip fruitless.

Good luck and make sure you got some large stones, SJW and smaller princes and peasant tails. Fish the slower deeper water with some chop, deep and slow presentation.

Cheers

Thanks Darter,

We will be up there around 930 or so and should be on the river around noon for 3-4 hours of fishing before having to head home. If it is decent I think we will probably end up there again in the near future if the weather stays nice.

Nah I am pretty sure we will just head to that deer foot bridge and head upstream for a few hours. If we had all day I would go find some other places that have been mentioned but because we have a short amount of time we figure the best place would just be deerfoot to give us more time on the water.

should be ok nate. i haven't heard of any ticketing going on there for a couple years now. 22x is a different story. i think they have left the anglers access @ one of the two bridges. things may be different in the winter as i don't winter fish there. there have been people parking on the warmer days in the past few weeks.

Thanks, All this talk of spots is all jibberish to me. Might as well be talking a different language. I don't know anywhere along the bow. I have heard of alot of different places but wouldn't have a clue on how to get to any of them.

send it to Dace.....i said DONT!!!!!! lol
you guys should just head south on Deerfoot....get off at the bow bottom exit and follow Bow bottom trail ...no turns..straight go....till you hit the river at fish creek park......fish from 22x bridge down stream.....deep pools and good run water......simple to get to and good fishing.
