Not yet....checked last night....think the ground is still too cold up here.

In 2006 and 2007, we found the first ones on May 12.....but they're later this year I guess.

Get the proper mushroon identifying book before you try and eat anything you find growing wild. There is a type of mushroom that looks very much like a morel that is poison. You should be able to get a mushroom book from any book store......

Better still to find a friend that is an experienced morel mushroom picker and invite them to go morel picking with you.

Have you checked any recent burns? The black morels are the finest of all, found in recent wildfire burns. They are showing and the spring eating is just fine, especially with the moose and venison from the freezer!!!!!

So we went out to a place near Calgary and managed to find a few false morels but no true morels. It's a little dry still so we're hoping for some more rain and try the spots again.

Does anyone know if the false morels grow in the same type of areas as true morels?

Awsome haul! Those are beauties!

A bit of advice, for two good reasons, For free....

Cut the morels from the ground rather than pulling them.

First, the mycelium (roots) could produce more mushrooms if they are not disturbed.

Second, you will have much cleaner mushrooms at home without the dirt going into the bag. Diry morels are tough to clean.

Enjoy!

Hit a few spots east of the city and got skunked for morels. Found a few but they were old and dried up. Headed west toward Bragg Creek but couldn't really find any public areas not in the provincial park with mature cottonwoods.

Then in the evening went fishing at Bonavista and guess what, found a bunch right on the island in the lake . Unfortunately I think they spray the area with chemicals and it's full of bird poop so didn't bother to take any. Of all the places to find them after a day of driving all over hunting for them.....

Wife and I checked this weekend in a couple places, came out empty handed and soaked. It did look like someone was picking in there cause the places I feel they should have been did have what looked like holes left where they were picked from. Will try again.

ON a good note, I did find a little beg in the freezer from last year, and they were cooked with the Whitetail for dinner last night.

We did go to that area (I'm assuming you mean SW) but couldn't find any public areas to wander around. The stuff along the side of the road on 24th was barren as far as we could see as there's too much gravel and slope I think. I'm not a fan of looking for edibles along busy roads so I didn't look at the areas right along 22x.

I went back to an area that produced some morels last week and only found two old crumbly morels tonight so I think they might be mostly finished in the city now. The grass is sure getting really long and the mosquitos are getting deadly with this wet weather.
