Default Backpacks

Hey, I’m going to do a 7ish day hiking trip this year and need a new pack. Any recommendations? Are the hunting packs as comfortable as Gregory or osprey 60-70 litre packs? Cabelas, mystery ranch, eberstock as reference for hunting packs. Thank you.

I own Stone glacier, deuter, eberlestock, camp trails, timbuk2 and asolo. Trashed a few others. Been all over the world and up more mountains than I can count.

The only pack I use now is the Stone Glacier (Sky archer x curve frame). Also the only pack brand I’ll buy for my family or recommend. You rarely see them for sale second hand, which says a lot.

The hunting packs are miles ahead of the backpacking brands regardless of end use or load carried. I’d rather hike barefoot and naked with my SG than carry any other pack.

I tried all different kinds over the years. The only one I have now is Tatonka frame pack.
My back will break before this breaks. Stands up when you take it off. All welded aluminum. 6#.
You see other brands try to copy it but it’s the simplest version.
I wouldn’t hike naked and barefoot with it though because thats just weird. lol.

You do not need to spend a lot of money or get very technical to have a good time backpacking. If you are only going to use it once a year try renting or borrowing before you buy. Your fitness level will determine how easily you carry a load much more than the "quality" of your backpack.

From humans to horses, cheaply bought/ designed packs will inflict misery & heartbreak under sustained heavy loads on multi overnight backcountry backpacking trips.

Good advice on renting or borrowing.

Good packs but they’re copied off of the original camp trails packs. So although the tatonka is imitated allot it’s already an imitation. 😎
Sorry couldn’t resist.

But you do have a good point, frame packs are still the best way to carry a heavy load. I’m still using my camp trails pack from 1981

No worries. I’m a bit of a history buff.
Looks like that camp trails is a metal version of the OG trapper Nelson style.
I wonder if anyone made a carbon fibre version of the tatonka. 🙂

Duluth packs are another great old brand.
