Yukon alaska trip

So, it looks like I'm going to the Yukon to accompany my son and a friend who plan a hike in the Tombstone mountains. While they're doing their thing, I plan to amuse myself by touring and doing some rock looking and gold panning, I'd also like to swing over into Alaska. Plan is to bring a little bear insurance but realize I need a temporary importation permit for my shot gun, US legal barrel length of course. Anybody done this, time required and best way to proceed ?

permit issued by email within 2-3 weeks or sooner, valid for one year.

I do it every year to hunt chukars in Idaho. Last year travelled to the Yukon with a shotgun in the RV, no problem crossing into Haines, AK. At the CDN border, just have to show your FAC.

Tombstone is an amazing place, was there early September, no bugs, no bears. Maybe a bit too late for perfect colors, most of the yellow was gone...

Thanks guys, Yukon is not totally new to me, but there is still a lot to see. Plan as of today is to take a rental from Whitehorse up to their drop off area and return by way of Chicken and Beaver Creek.

If you do manage to bring your shotgun, make sure you've got some bird loads. I never much worried about bears up there, but with it being light all the time the ravens seem to enjoy having screaming parties outside your camper at ungodly hours

I'd try and find time to hit Valdez, possibly the most scenic drive in AK, and the bay has some of the best shore fishing for pink salmon in the world.

Reach out if you're down at the southern end of the Territory (Tagish Lake) and want to get out after some lakers or grayling! I am about 5 km south of Ten Mile - water access only.

I took a couple different boys from the forum out last summer - had some good times out on the water : )

If you're staying up north then enjoy your time up the Dempster. I was up there for moose last year on opening day. Pretty country!

7 Trips to Alaska and the Yukon and only seen a few bear and definately didn't need Bear spray or a shotgun, had one come through our campsite on the Dempster hwy and he just kept on walking, didn't bother anybody and our friends west of Whitehorse have the blacks and grizz on their property all the time with no problems for 20+ yrs.

The Tombstones are beautiful.
I was there in Peak Mosquito season, It was wicked.
I wouldn't go in June.
