Default Grafting apple trees

I have a young apple tree in my front yard that I would like to graft to, from an old tree that's in my back yard.

What time of year is best?
Any experts or recommendations in the EDM area?

I'd like to do this within the next year before my great ol' tree in the back gives up the ghost.

thanks
hh

I grew up in BC, worked for a arbor nursery in my youth, we always grafted in the spring to give the tree the best chance.

I'm by no means an expert, my success with grafting is slightly above 50%.
The rule I've been taught is to do it before the buds start, and after the risk of heavy frost is gone. Be sure to use shoots that match in size as close as possible to be able to Iine up the bark on 2 sides and tape her tight. Seal with liquid electrical tape or the stuff they actually sell for the purpose.
Good luck.

You cut the dormant scionwood from the tree you want to graft about April 1 and put them in the fridge (not freezer) with a damp (not wet) bit of paper towel in a zip lock bag. Then you graft from the last week in April anytime through to early June on the new tree. Lots of folks into grafting and horticulture in Edmonton.

Any ideas on the best places to find scion donors? I have a couple crab apples that could be upgraded, bought a set of these gracting shears this year, looking forward to doing this in Bowness Calgary next spring:
