Sad note about Pneumonia and Alberta's bighorn sheep
Hunters and back country users should report any dead sheep they see.
And I quote from a post on facebook posted by Western Canadian Game Warden Magazine:
"Last week, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas biologists, along with Conservation Officers, Fish and Wildlife Officers and staff from Forestry, Parks and Tourism, confirmed the deaths of several bighorn sheep among a small herd of 16 in the Sheep River Blue Rock Wildland area west of Diamond Valley. Other sheep in this small herd displayed symptoms of a respiratory disease. Laboratory results confirmed an infectious bacterial pneumonia (Mycoplasma) as the cause of death.
Given the highly infectious nature of bacterial pneumonia and high mortality in sheep infected with this disease, Environment and Protected Areas biologists made the difficult but necessary decision to euthanize the remaining 5 bighorn sheep in the herd in order to prevent further spread of this highly infectious disease.
A much larger herd of up to 100 bighorn sheep approximately 5 to 8 kilometres away from the infected herd was evaluated last week and shows no signs of illness. The outbreak appears to be contained to the small herd but Environment and Protect Areas will undertake additional monitoring on the large herd and other bighorn sheep herds in Alberta. There is no danger of this disease being transmitted to humans. "

deaths of several bighorn sheep among a small herd of 16 in the Sheep River
I'm going to go out on a limb, having hunted that herd and suggest that they live in virtual isolation, they're in a sanctuary, and rarely interact with other sheep outside their particular area. Kind of like CWD and game farms.

Disease among wild animals is nothing new, it happens all the time be it rabbits, sheep, deer, bison, whatever and it will continue as long as there are wild animals, especially amongst social herd animals as it is easily transmitted.

How many domestic animals are in the area that they interact with? I also heard there was talk of running domestic goats in parks for weed control, has anyone else heard this?

If there's anything the last 2.5 years has taught us it's that humans need to fix everything we perceive to be broken at any cost.
Even when we will inevitably make things worse.

That sanctuary was established over 50 years ago and the population has been on a slow but steady decline.

Weird. Wonder why....
With that being said when I was out there last year I noticed I noticed the increase in mule deer populations. Maybe something is being done behind closed gates

I have pictures this summer of an ear tagged ram over 50km (as the crow flies) from their usual spot by the Bighorn lookout. He was a smaller one that joined up with a few other non tagged smaller rams.

Unfortunately, your suggestion couldn't be further from the truth.
These sanctuary sheep have been intensely studied with years and years of telemetry data. These sheep leave the sanctuary in all directions, interacting with others from B.C., from Plateau Mt., Fortress, the Elbow....
Fortunately most of the sick sheep will be dead before summer travels resume.

Unfortunately, without human intervention this has the potential to spread like wildfire and do a lot of damage to our sheep populations
This is the number 1 threat to wild sheep. Nothing is worse

Mycoplasma in cattle sneaky, deadly little bacteria. Not intensely overwhelming like some & kill quick, more a steady lethal little bug that kills the host.

Not sure there's even a link. Mycoplasma has been identified for a long time, and many species(humans included) can carry the bacteria.

There has been a ram collared on Plateau and hes travelled all the way to the Crowsnest Pass. The sheep on the Livingston are getting in with domestic sheep and cattle as well on the eastern side.

If you google how far bighorns migrate, 25 miles comes up a fair bit (distance from Turner Valley to Bragg Creek). Sheep bio I know figures some bighorns can and do range further.
Right at 22x/66 there's a guy that has bred some kind of goats for packing (meat?) for a couple of decades.
Traveling up/down 762 and 22 you'd be surprised at the number of acreages and ranches bordering forestry that keep domestic goats, sheep, llamas etc.
Not that much of a stretch to imagine wild sheep stumbling into domestic (infected) livestock.
Creeky....

Actually there are one or more studies on this, not sure if they are definitive though.

Regardless of what side of things a person sits on with what & how things have taken place (with the Sheep River herd west of Turner Valley), the following website is a good resource for more information on M.ovi aka Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae. The documentary film Transmission (found in the below weblink) is a must watch as well.
