Default Lowrance structure scan question

Hey guys, i have the Lowrance 5 HDS Gen 2 and my question is i'm looking at adding the structure scan unit also. There are 2 units that i found im guessing 1st generation and a 2nd generation. The question is do i spend the extra 200-300 for the newer 1 or are they basically both the same???????

You likely won't be able to buy the LSS1 new at this point, only the LSS2.

From what I've read, the performance is very similar between the two, with each version having some things it does better than the other, but overall, the LSS2 is slightly better. The biggest advantage to the LSS1 is that the transducer is much smaller.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, especially if you can find a good deal on the LSS1. The LSS2 does have a pretty strong following in the used market though as some guys prefer it to the new LSS2.

SCHOOCH,

I have the Lowrance HDS-8 unit (Gen 1) and went ahead and bought the structure scan at the same time. The structure scan allows you to see items in the water column differently than the sonar. It does provide more of a 3D view and allows you to view items in clearer definition than a sonar unit. However, I find that I do not go to the structure scan view often, and hindsight being 20:20, I would NOT have spent the extra money.

If you are looking for structure such as trees, old sunken boats, etc, then I can see it being worth while. However, I am typically a walleye/laker/trout fisherman, and 99% of the time use the sonar and GPS mapping. I use structure scan more as a novelty than a tool.

My two cents for you..........
