Default Fishing Great Slave Lake, Eastern arm

I recently got back from my fishing trip to Great Slave, with a good friend who came up from Sydney Australia. I drove up to Yellowknife on the 7th, met Warren at the airport on the 8th, and we flew out by charter to the Lodge the morning of the 9th (40 minute flight on a Dash 8, landed on a dirt strip at local village).

We then were driven down to the Stark River, taken across by boat to the Lodge, and fed an wonderful chowder for lunch. I won't go on about the food, but suffice to say it was excellent, and lots of it, and I gained a couple pounds.

The staff and accommodation were also excellent, good clean cabins, recently renovated, with very comfortable mattresses. It exceeded my expectations.

We met our guide, Cade, after lunch. He is what Don Cherry would describe as a beauty. Just a super young man, about my sons age. Very good knowledge of fishing and the Lake, and just an absolute great person to fish with. When I go back again (when, not if) I will be asking for him again, 100%.

And now, for the important bit, the fishing.

Wow. Just, wow. We didn't catch any monsters, my biggest laker was 35" and 16 lbs, Warren got a 31" 13lb fish. But, we landed 80+ Lakers fishing half day Saturday, all day Sunday and Monday, and 2 hours on Tuesday morning before the plane came for us. As well, we landed 45+ pike, and Warren got the lone grayling. He got most of the pike, I was busy taking pics and video as it was such a highlight for him.

We also managed to land 3 double headers Tuesday morning, something we'd come close to a couple times prior but not managed to pull off. We were pretty chuffed about it too!

The weather was rainy one day, the rest of the time it was beautiful, but I was sure thankful I wore my Minion suit (yellow Helly Hanson's). It was a little chilly at times crossing lake, and wet.

It was an amazing good time, and quite frankly I liked it better then my trips to Haida Gwaii. It is incredibly beautiful, and we saw muskox and lots of bison (on the drive back). My friend said it is the best fishing he has ever done.

I am going to try my hand at posting some pics here, most are of Warren as I wanted to get a good record for him, so he could shatter his friends back in Australia with jealousy. He succeeded at it too!

Thanks Mark. It did a lot to restore my soul from the last two years, sincerely.

I have a few more pics to post. The lake trout are amazing, there is so much variation in coloring, yellow red and orange fins, spots. Absolutely one of the prettiest fish I have caught, and great fighting fish. This is our guide Cade. What a beauty!

I'm sitting in the Maple Leaf Lounge in Calgary, got a flight home in about 6 hours, and having some trouble with Wi-Fi, but going to keep at it.

The scenery there was incredible, Redcliff was awe inspiring!

Warren with his 31" pike he flew halfway around the world to catch, and which he was totally satisfied with. He said it was the best fishing he had ever done, and he has fished Tiger fish in the Zambezi and Murray cod in Australia, and all sorts of other places. I think it blew his mind to land 28 pike in a morning. He was giggling like a little kid!

And then we went out after supper one night for a bit of fly infested fun to try our hand at Grayling on the Stark. Not my idea of a good time, nor his, but, he got his 16" grayling and got the Trifecta of trout, pike and grayling to get taxidermy done for his cabin in Australia. He was more happy for that grayling then any of the others he caught. I couldn't wait to get the hell away from all the sand and horse flies, it was bloody awful!

Some more random pics from our trip. This fish wasn't particularly big, but the coloring and spots! Beautiful!

Holy Carp!!! That really does look amazing. I imagine those Redcliffs in person was something else. Hard to capture the size on a camera.
You are right about the lakers. Some have a lot of orange. Huge Grayling.
That looks like a truly amazing trip. Makes me go hmmmm....
Thanks for sharing.

Highly recommended. Great value for the cost in my experience. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Great pictures and congratulations on a great trip for both you and your friend.

I have fished that area a few times and as pretty as the cliffs are I just cannot be beside them. Just not my comfort zone.

Thumbs up

That looks like a great adventure, the scenery and toss in a shore lunch is awesome

I am with you when you say the bugs biting....when I head out fishing I prefer the only thing to bite is the fish.

Thx for sharing.
