Germans from Russia recipe wanted.
My great grandparents are called, "Germans from Russia". My mother learned many great recipes from her mother and I was lucky enough to learn a few from my mother who passed 3 years ago. I have had a craving for a pumpkin dessert and I dont know the name or ingredients beside the mashed pumpkin. The mashed pumpkin and spices were placed in a dough pocket and baked. I loved it. I tried my version, which was not the same, and placed it in a rolled out puff pastry pocket. I am hoping someone out there can supply me with the ingredients and even the name. Please help. BEL

It’s called a Plachinda, very tasty. Haven’t had them in years, basically a pumpkin turnover.

Have you tried searching websites for Volga Germans or Volhynian Germans? I’ve seen them in the past, couldn’t name any specifically though.

thanks
I have done some research but not so specific like Volga russians/germans. The plachinda name sounds very familiar. I will try this recipe tomorrow as I have quite a bit of roasted pumpkin ready to go. Thanks guys.

2 of my grandparents came from the Odesa region on the black sea, born to German parents.
Can't help you with that recipe but still make and eat a lot of the old German / Russian / Ukrainian foods

Your search might open up a bit with a spelling variation.
Blachinda seems a common name in the Dakotas with a population of Germans from Russia.
My ex was a German Mennonite who's family came from South Russia.
My family also German from Bukovina in modern Day Romania near Moldova.
Can't find anything like this in either of our family recipe collections, so it must have been popular in a more localized area.
Seems to be 2 schools of thought on these.
Ones made strictly sweet as dessert and some made more savoury with the addition of onions and Black Pepper

Wow didnt think there would be this many Germans out of Russia on this page. My great grandparents also came out of the Odesa area. They settled in and around regina ( Krono ) . I never received any historic or cultural recipes from them. I am certainly going to try the stuff posted her.
Thanks Guys

Medicine Hat
Several years ago I attended a ceremony in Medicine Hat celebrating the Germans from Russia who settled in the area. According to records, 55% of the people in the Medicine Hat area are descendents of these people. Amazing

This is a bit of a co-incidental topic to pop up now as I've very recently read a memoir from one of my great grandmothers who lived in a German area of Russia prior to emigrating to Canada. They were German but leased farmland in Russia. Trying to look up the name of the town she was born turns up some of her siblings, but not a location on a map (at least so far).

That's where my late grandparents (Woelfles) and my mother are from. They settled originally in Pivot Saskatchewan which was just North of Medicine Hat and is just a farmer's field now. My grandmother used to regale us with tales of the soddy she grew up in and how the proper mixture of clay and cow dung made nice hard shiny floors. Wattle and daub works I guess!

Interesting thread. My great grandparents also were from the Odessa area in the Ukraine. They settled in southern Saskatchewan.

My mothers family were from the area of Dniepropetrovsk in Ukraine. Some made it west to refugee camps then eventually settled around Leduc and Calmar. Others not so lucky and were shipped to Kazakhstan.
