Default Sturgeon Rig Question

First off I'd like state that I'm fairly new to fish and new to this forum. I read a post here about sturgeon rigs and attempted to make a few of my own tonight. For my rig line I'm using 40lb Trilene Big Game. I snelled my hook and for my swivel I just made an over hand knot with loop. My question is will this setup be work well for my sturgeon rigs or should I do something different? Thanks in advance.

uni knot for snell.

Palomar for swivel. Palomar is a very strong knot and would work well. Moisten all knots before snugging up.

Tie hook/leader to swivel first with palomar then swivel to mainline with palomar.

Just curious if there's a reason you suggest a uni knot for snelling the hook as opposed to a snell knot

was thinking the same thing, I have always used a snell or egg loop !

But for the OP , I usually use the same thing 40 lb big game from Berkley, and I have had no issues what so ever !

Uni's can be easier to tie for beginners than traditional snell knots.

I use a palomar for every part of my rig. had the line break but never the knot. definitely prefer heavier braid 50 minimum and 80 on my baitcasters. so far no issues with 2 dinos in the 6 foot range. (pics to follow eventually) use good Gamakatsu or Owner hooks around 4/0 and never go too far from your rod

Uni also easy to tie, but more versatile. back to back uni will connect one line to another(mono to mono, superline to mono, superline to superline etc).

If You only learn 2 knots, these should be the ones.

Palamar knot one of the strongest.

If you look back into episodes on Know Wars they tested snell knots and the "Basic Snell" came out the winner. If you take a look at how they tie their "Basic Snell" it is just a Uni knot around the shank of a hook.

Related question, what knot can I use to tie multiple hooks on a flurocarbon rig? I'm trying to make double leech walleye rigs but I can't get a snell knot to stay tied. I just need a flurocarbon knot that ends with the tail running down the hook so I can tie another one a couple inches down.

I forget what the knot is called... but its basically a double snell knot, i do this when tying my hootchies for salmon fishing. Tie your first hook with a snell and leave a long enough tag to tie a second snell trailer hook behind it. Perhaps someone on here can better help you...

Use a blood knot to connect the two lines for the walleye setup.

Just use the basic snell and leave a long tag end after the first hook.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm also wondering if I could use braided line to make sturgeon rigs?

Might/will be a little harder on the sturgeon.

Braid is too limp, sucks for making rigs. Your best off to use heavy mono IMO.

Ive had days where the only indication a sturgeon is on your bait is the little clapper in the bell twitches. use heavy mono and you wont be fighting that fish. the days where they just hit and run away with your rod and reel it will be fine. depends on how many you want to catch I guess

One of the biggest problems I've been facing is my knots (blood, palomar, etc.) Seem lose and a few have pulled loose.
