Default Fly Tying

Hey gang

Just got a bunch of fly tying gear for Christmas, so I figured since I'm living in The Great White North now, Ill have some downtime to learn how to tie flies. What I am looking for is suggestions for Pike, they seem to be fairly plentiful around town. What size of hook am I going to be wanting to use. Im used to trout and salmon from back home. Its a different world up here! Would I want to go a 1/0 hook, or is that going to be too big. Also I will take any advice of what works for walleye, whitefish, innconnu, burbot.

Im not looking for your super secret flies, more hooks sizes, colours, materials. I am going to make some random ones too for ****s and giggles, more just to learn how to put everything together.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and hopefully reply!

Mike

Double bunnies work great and are easy to tie. Get some fish skulls and no a 1/0 hook is small for pike but will work. 2/0 and 3/0 work good. Buy stainless hooks and you will get a couple re ties on it. As for pike patterns if it looks like a fish pike will eat it.

Same black wooly bugger you'd use for trout, just use a steel leader and a little lead in the body.Quick, cheap and easy to tie.

I have had good luck for Yukon pike with Lefty's Deceivers, sunk off a drop and stripped back up the slope. My general thought is big, bushy, heavy and splashy. So far, I have had no luck with surface fishing, but they are grumpy buggers that will eat anything on their cloud, so your mileage may differ.

Enjoy

Wholesale Sports and Cabelas.ca are both good options for basic stuff. There are some really good websites out of Washington that have materials I haven't been able to find up here but our dollar has taken a beating so you may want to substitute with something similar. http://www.canadianllama.com/ And http://www.flymart.ca/2304/home/ have a ton of really good stuff as well.

Derek...this may or may not help you (older ad in GP Kijiji). Someone (unknown to me) is unloading a pile of fly equipment, if it still available you may be able to work out something. His # is included.
