Default Ground truth air photo info.

Some years back I was in one of my hunting areas and decided to take a hike accross a wet muskeg to get to some higher ground I had always seen and wanted to explore. I got over on the high ground and there was loads of deer sign. the forest was thick and visibility limited but there were deer trails and sign everywhere. Over the years I have a number of times tryed to figure out how I could effectively hunt the area. A coupe months ago I go looking on some recent air photos and low and behold the area has been partly logged off. It is almost an island in muskeg so I figured the deer would be daytiming in the remaining forested area and coming into the cut-blocks to feed. I was planning where I would park my truck or set up a tent camp and how to get into the area on the down wind side in early morning. I was selecting areas to set up tree stands and wondering if I could quad in on the old logging roads to get game out.(all this by looking at the air photos)

Then I took an opportunity to go out and walk the area and see how it looks on the ground.

Big difference. First of all it has a lot more "hillyness" than I imagined. I will have to get up high to see a long way in it. Second of all the logging is more recent than I thought. There is almost no vegitation growing there yet. There was the odd track of moose and deer out in the cutblock but not much as there is nothing much to eat in it yet. I guess I'll have to wait a couple years for this to turn into a hot spot for me.

DON'T WAIT!

You'll be amazed at how much food will grow in those blocks this summer....the game will be using those blocks for food for sure!

There is no doubt that area was a winter logging area...so access may be difficult until everything freezes....

What you are seeing are the same kind of places I look for when scouting...after a few years the growth in those blocks will limit the visibility into them and nature will take its course as the new growth become forests...

By the way, there is a way to view those air photos in "stereo" (3-d)...this will help you ground truth to see terrain...

All you need is a pair of "Stereo Glasses" and overlapping photos.....pretty cool to do.....

Just send me the long & lat coordinates, and I'll keep an eye on that spot for you Duffy! I'll call you when it greens up a little more
It's amazing how much footwork those satelite images save - but nothing beats a walk in the woods to get the real lay of the land.
