Default Price of a Good Fishing Rod?

So over 10 years ago, I was using a borrowed fishing rod to cast with while visiting in B.C. The rod belonged to my best friend's uncle, who's house we (me and my best friend) were staying at while dirt biking. I didn't know at the time the rod was his, as his son gave it to me to fish with, so naturally, since I didn't have permission to be using it, I broke it in two while walking through deep grass. The hook caught just right and SNAP! I always intended on buying him a new rod. An even better one. But before I made it back to B.C. my neck done broke and travelling is kind of out now.

So I lost touch with all of them for years, but thanks to facebook, I tracked his wife down in B.C. So now that I have their mailing address, I want to send him the amount for what a good rod would cost for fresh water fishing. I'm sure he has a new rod by now... oops, yeah.

So I'm wondering, what is the price of a good rod? Because I'd like to send a money order tomorrow. Before they figure out what I'm up to.

Thanks everyone!

That's a hard one. A decent rod can start 200-250ish. Several come in at 400. Even a couple can push a grand. I saw a fly fishing do a couple of weeks ago that was 2400.

Please take this with a grain of salt as everyone's opinion is different on what a good rod is. My fly rod was 90, and it seems good to me but I don't have anything to compare it to yet, as I have only just started fly fishing and am on a bit of a budget right now.

Hope this helps somewhat...

Ok, well the rod I broke was worth about $50ish ten years ago. So I was wondering if $100-150ish would be half decent nowadays?

Would that cover a good fishing rod?

Thanks for the help, BigA!

$100 or a little more will get a quality rod for sure.

Ok, I'm going to send $100. I think that's reasonable and won't leave him feeling awful about being forced to take the money at that amount. They're good people and if it was too high of an amount, I know they'd send it back, haha.

Thanks guys!

Crappy tire has an abu garcia rod reel combo, regular 79 on for 29 right now, and a quantum octane rod reel reg 129 for 64,, nice deal on shimano rods too. The abu is the specialist series.

I think a 100 gift certificate to bass pro or something of the like would suffice. But ya, like gustav said Canadian Tire is prob a good option since they are everywhere. And most people that fish dont spend over 50-100 bucks for a rod and/or reel. Assuming the reel still works 100 bucks will get you a pretty nice rod on it's own! There's usually good specials at crappy tire too!

From my point of view, if I broke somebodies equipment I would replace it of equal or better value. Just to throw some money at a problem is not my was of saying sorry and thank you, unless they no longer fish. Ask a family member if they could use something different.....but not money...IMO...

Just to throw some money at the problem? Let's take it down a notch. I don't want to decide how they're going to replace the rod I broke of their's 10 years ago. They're very bright people, they can decide how to spend the money I owe them for a replacement better than I can. I don't need to be all up in their business.

Thanks, everyone! It's in the mail now!

I spent around $700 all in for a G-Loomis rod and an Akuma reel. Top notch and ultra light one piece.
