For Alberta I'd say that it's a toss up. Big pike fight pretty hard, and big trout too. I hear sturgeon are pretty good too... but honestly I think suckers fight really hard too. Just saying.
Saltwater is a whole different story..

its really tough to judge a fish # for #. a guy can catch a 50# sturgeon on the fraser and drag it in within minutes when geared up for the monsters. for big comparable size fish i feel like marlin fight 10x harder than a sturgeon. rooster fish and jack crevalle fight pretty damn good too.

I usually keep 14"-16" Rainbows for the table. Their physical strength impresses me every time that I handle one out of water. They would be my vote for Alberta fish.
As for saltwater, having caught only a marlin and a yellow fin tuna, my vote goes for the marlin.

I had a 10" trout take a stonefly nymph in a trib to the Sheep, and of the 30 seconds or so I had it on, he was tail walking back and forth the pool for maybe 20 seconds. He broke off, but I was thankful to just have witnessed that little bugger fight so heroically. I have never had a fish fight like that before or since.

I wonder if it was a native cutthroat.

A 25+ pike on 6 lb. line is fun. 4 lb. rocky mtn. whites on 4 lb. line in the NSR are a challenge. I've only caught smallmouth to 3 lb. on 6 lb. line and they were fun too.

I would have to say that a 60+ lb. searun spring salmon on 40 lb. line in the freshwater Skeena river, only 25 miles from the ocean so the salmon are silver bullets, was the best fighter. Big fast river... almost 5 hours later and a half mile downstream my tail noose slipped around her tail. My elbows hurt for three days, from the torque of that fish's runs.

Lake sturgeon are the toughest we've caught. When you have a 57" fish clear the water and repeatedly make 30-40 meter runs that you can't stop , I've never seen my spool so many times. Not a good feeling. And we are set up for them !

Pound for pound, Bluegill sunfish. They fight like a bulldog on a string!

Smallmouth are tough and have character, some stay deep and dig for the bottom all the way in, most you can't keep in the water. When fishing in tournaments its common to stick you rod underwater when fighting them to keep them from jumping and throwing the bait. Plus they love to destroy top-water baits.

Gar are fun and underrated for their fight. Great runs and if that doesn't work they get into the air.

Saltwater fish are a different topic and always seem tough.

All fish are fun, big ones will beat you up, small ones surprise you with effort.
I enjoy them all.

X2 , first one I thought of when read the title. There little terrors super fun, a 3/4lb bluegill will top a 3/4# anything mentioned yet.

Seems to be a few sturgeon mentioned never caught one yet though, and catfish. You guys that say rainbows need to get out more .

lol I love these comments... pound for pound!! Tie a 5lb smallie to a 5lb sturg I would say the smallie would tow it backwards..

Surprised no bonefish comments.. again for the size of them they would out pull most anything... POUND FOR POUND...
